@avantman42: Oh god. SCART. We're still using that in France... >_<". (Well, not so much for a few years now, but still, my DVD player *is* using a SCART connector right now... -_-"). (We call them 'péritel' plugs...)

Shipping is usually included in the direct-from-China vendors so a USB cable will only cost you $4. I had one of these shipped to Canada without any problems: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Short-Usb-male-ri...-/390254285866 MonoPrice.com USB cable: http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2 Cripe. $0.85 anyone? I just wish they would decide on which way is 'up' on a micro-B connector.

I have 4 devices that use them and it's a 50-50 split as to which way they regard as 'up'.

If the female receptacle is soldered onto the bottom of a circuit board (as seen from the user's perspective) it would put the plug upside-down, versus soldering to the top of the board. Combine that with manufacturers looking for the best deals on components and the possibility there is only one type of socket available (bottom solder or top solder with no choice of the opposite). |

I've currently got a VCR, DVD player, cable box and TV all connected together with SCART leads. The TV is a CRT one, so I suppose when we get an LCD TV we'll finally be able to ditch the SCART leads.

SCART is an awful standard. The plug and cable seem to be specifically designed so it slowly gets levered out of the socket by the weight of the cable. No locking mechanism at all either. The whole point was to standardise on the connector for TVs which it did because before SCART, you'd get a wide range of sockets and plugs but the actual plug they chose is still awful.

Actually, we can thank the European Union for mandating a standard to eliminate or reduce the landfill component of propriety ac charger plugs and voltages. Has Apple's new stuff joined the standards or are they still totally proprietary in plugs/cables/adapters?

The new Blackberry's use the new micro usb. And I've now got a collection of "resize" adapters - micro to mini and mini to micro. Crackberry.com sells a micro to mini 1" adapter. And monoprice user, here, too. I got a 50 foot hdmi for about that price. Talk about weight wanting to unseat a cable - hdmi flunks that test. |

The sync/charge cables from Apple are just regular cables but some of their other cables like the newer component video output cables have a special authentication chip built into them. If the newer iDevices which support video output don't detect that chip then they won't enable the output. That is all the chip is there for. It doesn't do any conversion or processing of the video signal. |

In the rare case where you have to run a cable under carpet or you have to bend it at a near 90 degree angle, you will also want a higher quality cable with extra shielding/padding, which you can't get for 2$. Again, realize I was speaking of HDMI cables here |

I agree, when possible I buy a spool and make my own cables (rg/cat) but with HDMI this isn't yet convenient/possible

True. You have to buy the cable for that and I wouldn't trust the really cheap suspicious no name cables because of the reasons you stated. Especially if this cable is going to end up in the wall or something which will be difficult to access later on. Spend the $$$ on a good quality cable.

My HTC EVO uses micro USB. Both the charging and the USB cables I have for the Kindle, including a cheap retractable I bought on eBay, work great on the EVO too.
