hello, and starter questions ...

hello to all!

a friend recommended that i buy a kindle for my wife, online research led to this site, and now it looks like i may have to buy a pair so i can use one myself!

my browsing here has lead to a couple of general questions ...

where do i start as far as finding out software/computer requirements, process, etc. for removing DRM and changing the formatting of ebooks?

one of my hopes with an eReader is that it will lead me to new books and authors that i like and that may have otherwise gone undiscovered, without what to this point has been the accumulation of partially read before abandoning paperbacks. i find that some bestselling authors are my cup of tea (grisham, larssen) while others are not (patterson, coben). what is the best way to go about learning of new authors and guessing if they are going to appeal to me? i'm predicting that "relatively unknown" does not imply "not worth reading."

thanks!

Welcome to MobileRead, tm3

Two K3's are the way to go, for sure. Make sure they are both bought on the same account, with the same charge card, then you can both "share" books.

The best way to see if you like new authors, is just to look at the synopsis, and then take the plunge if it interests you.

If you try a new author from Amazon, you can download a sample to see if you like it.

This board has lots of indie authors that I would have never known about......and I've found some wonderful reads.

All genres are represented. The neat thing? Their books are very inexpensive.......

AND......don't forget the free books available here...public domain, beautifully formatted for whichever device you decide on.

You'll have to just Google the DRM removal (it's easy and it's a no-no to discuss it here). After that, you just need calibre to do any conversions.

You might try some of your favorite authors on Literature-Map.

Hello and welcome. If you and your wife are both avid readers, you definitely each need a Kindle.

thanks for the welcomes and i'm going to start playing with the literature map tool.

desertgrandma the indie authors in a variety of genres (and for low prices) sounds like what i was hoping to find. how does one go about "discovering" them by genre?

Welcome to MR! A great thing about the Kindle is that you can download a sample and decide if the book is your cup of tea before you buy :-)
