Building book 'collections'

Just wandering is there any way I can build collections in the DR1000S? Under the Book menu, such as novel, tech files, magazines or journals.

Currently this is not possible, an alternative is to use the SD Card-view instead of the Books-view. Since the code of the firmware is published, it is also possible to change it and create the feature that you want yourself (or find someone to create it ).

Can you describe how such a feature should look like? How do you determine which documents are novel, tech files, magazines or journals? How to select which category should be shown?

Thanks for the reply.
My thought was quite simple, if I create a new folder under the Book folder in SD card, it would be recognized by the machine as one "collection", and shown as a sub-catagory in the Book menu.

Alternatively, we could even create these collections directly in the Home screen. maybe assign a screen area specifically for personalized collections.
Something like this:

Home
Reading
Novels, Journals, Magazines, Textbooks etc.

images
personal documents
recently added.
......

The way the DR firmware works is as follows (simplified):
- During each start-up of the device the SD-card is scanned for changed/added/deleted documents, an internal database is updated with this info.
- New documents are automatically tagged as 'book', 'image', 'news', 'personal', 'help' or 'note' (or nothing), also stored in the database.
- When selecting the Books-view, all documents tagged as 'book' are gathered, sorted and displayed. So it gathers all documents in all folders.
- When selecting the SD Card-view, the same database is also used, but now only the documents that are present in a folder are gathered and shown.

It seems that you want something like the SD Card-view. This view is default enabled on the DR1000, but on the DR800 you need to enable it in the settings (Advanced Settings, Folder Based Navigation).

Note that the Books-view shows the name as it is in the metadata of the document, the SD Card-view shows the filename.

Adding extra icons on the Home screen is not possible with the standard firmware.

It is possible to add a new column in the file_metadata-table, but you should think carefully on what could go wrong when you install the original firmware from iRex again or new firmware if/when it is released?
Adding an extra table to the database (like thumbnails) would be an alternative, but that could also cause problems when up/down-grading I think.
I did not think about this long enough to know how severe the problems would be...

Adobe has a solution called Adobe Digital Editions. My aluratek requires that in order to manage the books and upload them to the reader. I don't think that the software cares one way or the other about which ereader its organizing books for and you might be able to use it to actually place the book on the reader as I do. I think its worth a try.http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

Just checked Digital Editions supports your ereader so its a real option for you.

A problem would be filling this value,
while UDS is a closed source, you only can add this field in plugin, or manually.
And not all plugins are open source!
And not all document formats supports such feature!

Additional field (if define it as field with default value) will not harm,
missed field on other hand will throw exception.

The original question was about managing the books on the device and not on the PC if I understood correctly. The DR support a 'view' that shows all books or a 'folder-view' that shows the books in the structure as they are stored on your SD Card.
Which kind of support do other e-readers provide for 'grouping' documents on the e-reader itself?

I have several series of book on my DR800S with DR1000 uds support. When I use author view on my DR800S the upload order is preseved If I have each series in its own directory. That means if I have books by Author A and make a folder Author A and a subfolder Series B on my DR800, upload the books of the series in order to folder Series B and reindex then the books of the series appear together in order rather that alphabetilcally by title.

Example

title of file "sample book first in series" (uploaded first)
title of file "a second sample book in series" (uploaded second)

Alphabetically the second one should display first as the title starts with "a". On my DR800 the don't the book starting "sample" is displayed first. Hope this helps

This is what I do (on the DR800, but same thing). Using the SD Card view I create whatever sub-directories I want and manage them that way.
