It never really gets that cold in California, so I am not too worried. Just for kicks I bought the Etna Tabletop Fireplace from fashion4home.com to create a nice atmosphere. My friends in the East Coast keep making fun of me over it, but I think it adds a little something to my living room! :P

Hey, that's cute!! Can we come over and make s'mores and sing Kumbaya?
That looks a lot nicer than the fireplace I downloaded from the Net; a ninety minute video of a of a fireplace with a couple of logs burning down... sound included, and watched on the computer monitor. With a little balsam fir incense pumping smoke into the room I almost feel like I'm back in the log cabin. Almost.

I just thought a general spread of what you would be informative. you know much like displaying your field gear on your bunk in basic training? (I seem to recall you were military?) give the name of the item, and a brief description of its use. I think it might be handy for a lot of folks who just now may be considering putting some of this gear together.

you are certainly FAR more organized than I am and I thought I was doing pretty good!

I think it's been mentioned... or at least assumed. my search and rescue pack has a fairly large first aid kit. (that actually needs to be replenished)

I thought I mentioned it but I may have just overlooked mentioning it (well, them). It's mostly stuff for dealing with varying severities of cuts and sprains, plus eye wash.

when I had kids at home I always had a couple of crates that were kept in the garage with our disaster supplies. in addition to crazy storms, this is also the land of not "if" but "when" the BIG ONE (earthquake) comes, are you prepared? I have rudimentary supplies in place, nothing like when I had kids at home, but now with all of these dire warnings, I'm thinking maybe I need to take inventory and stock up again.

how about everyone else? how do you stay prepared?
We are not prepared. It's probably time we did, as there is the possibility of a bad Tropical Cyclone/storm season this year (note, we're not in the full-on TC zone though). By coincidence just yesterday I was looking at our Queensland government's Emergency website. They have a checklist for Home Prep., a checklist for an Emergency Kit, and a checklist for an Evacuation Kit. I'll find them again later (I'm about to go out) and post links to them (PDFs) for consideration and criticism, if anyone's interested.

Cheers,
Marc

Here's a broader hint...Robert A. Heinlein's I will Fear No Evil, around the death of Jake Solomon. Ask how could you walk up to the front door....

Good idea -- that made me go and look at the website for my state's Emergency Management Agency, and they have a list of recommended emergency supplies also:

Sorry, DG. You missed it. My wife and I each carry one in our Earthquake bug-out bags. (page three, post #34) These are different first aid kits then the ones we carry camping, and different from the ones we carry when traveling to more remote parts of the world. Each scenario has its own special needs above and beyond the band-aids, triple-antibiotic cream, gauze pads and tape.

I've been thinking about how best to do this all morning. A photo of a jumble of gear on the bed (read: floor. We don't sleep on beds in Japan,) might be less helpful than a good close up analysis of each item.

Coming up and photo heavy!
