Just food for thought.........
They may feel the same way. I think if you are going to seriously consider an Apocalypse type event, you need to change your normal mind set considerably. Old rules don't apply. Not directed towards you in particular, pookey. ![]() |

Seriously, I am more than prepared for this kind of scenario.
The family owns an isolated property, easily defended and fully supplied. Unfortunately, if I am at work in Manhattan when things go bad, I will be in major trouble. Lots of bad territory to travel through at the best of times. And commuting while heavily armed is frowned upon. ![]() |

I am completely unprepared. Although we'd have a food reserve, I wouldn't be able to defend it.
And I really don't care. Just as I don't go around worrying about getting struck by lightning. |

If it's Mad Max time then I'd have to make sure that I'm with the baddest posse in town. We take over a defensible area and establish a trading post under our protection.

Yes, i am ready to go to any length to defend my family, without thinking twice. Although I think that when something like that happens there will be very little that can be done.

as I mentioned before, I am where people want to go for the end of the world. my property is fully fenced, and while it is climbable, it is barbed wire, so it isn't easy. there are plenty of other places between me and the main road (I am at a dead end) to get people's attention. I have both modern and old rifles and enough black powder to keep me going for quite some time. I have a pond and three streams on the property, deer graze here all the time. I am less than two miles from the ocean and can get both shellfish and salmon from the shoreline. there are wild berries everywhere during the right time of year. this next summer I will be adding chickens and bees to the farm.
right before I bought this place I wired the emergency response center for FEMA. I paid a LOT of attention to the various maps. I was able to see where all of the predicted tsunamis, and lahars would be. this is a good place to be in |

I am serious, we are in escrow for a new house, and will be able to get a big (well bigger) dog. Our little seven pound toy poodle just wouldn't hack it as a guard dog, except of course for making a lot of noise. But a Rottweiler or Mastiff; now THERE’S a burglar alarm!

DG, if you wait to the last minute, you are lost. If you go in advance, you lose out on all the advantages of civilization. All the hoarding concepts just prolong the inevitable, because it you lose civilization, you lose all of the toys.
If it wasn't for modern medical treatments, I literally wouldn't have lived past age 5. I'll enjoy civilization while I can. It'll probably outlast me... |

There's a scene at the end of a great sci-fi movie (or there oughta be, anyway) where some apocalyptic calamity has occurred and the mad hoardes of hoomins are screaming, running, fighting, pillaging, etc. trying to survive a little longer. All the while a doggie sits on a hill overlooking the chaos and laughs his head off (in between doughnuts, of course).
....and then the great big whatever-he/she/it-is appears and descends upon the doggie and the screen goes dark. Then the cartoons start! Last edited by vivaldirules; 10-20-2010 at 06:56 AM. |

Seriously, though, has anybody else read "Blindness?" There are plenty of those apocolyptic (sp?) novels out there, but that one really creeped me out. It's frightening to think of how quickly we would fall into that dog-eat-dog mentality. |
