Sure! Pick away! Just be ready to accept the consequences.

Do you ever (or have you ever) driven in excess of the speed limit? Did you feel guilty in doing so? Did you rationalize your law-breaking ways?

Yes (past tense). Yes. Not successfully. Then I grew up.

So everyone who breaks the speed limit is immature?

I don't see anything wrong with that if it means free (legal) content. Paperbacks in the 1950s often had adverts in them. When you buy something from Amazon or Ebay you are bombarded with adverts for "similar" products anyway, I don't see how it would be any different to that.

How many writers start out as professional authors? If they weren't professionals when they wrote their first book, why did they write it?

That actually might make sense... if we were talking about people who steal to feed their families. But we're talking about ebooks, a product no one needs, no one will starve without, and no one will be denied a room at the inn for being without. But the products can put food on the table for those who write and sell them, and to some degree, they are directly impacted by those stealing their work instead of paying for it.

There is simply no valid rationalization for stealing something no one needs, but a creator can potentially profit from. Which is why the idea of rationalizing a reason for pirating ebooks is morally bankrupt.
You're still assuming that legality or morality factor into people's decisions. They don't. If something is there it's a simple choice of download it or don't download it. Your job is to either make the paid for content more appealing than the free content, or use your existing powers to have the free content removed. Or you can look at it as free advertising, like a lot of writers do, or think of it the same as you would if someone bought a second hand paperback.

2. It isn't meant as justification, just the reality of the situation. It's like healthcare in the UK. We get it free, so we don't really care what money changes hands internally or for what reason.

Just wanted to chime in once more and say that I totally support jaywalking... I believe that the space cars have taken up so far should be reclaimed. Of course this works only in a society where there's no law of the jungle giving way to a sort of common sense order...
Given that this implies a universal rule of the individual without extensions (cars, law firms, etc), how can this be projected onto the book market?

Yes. While living in a society, we have to adapt to others in our actions, but each of us does decide in their mind what is right and wrong.

That wasn't the concept you conveyed. However, just deciding what is right and wrong will never make it so.

Nope, I meant uncompressed as referenced here. (link to HDMI spec and not blu-ray, but same point). That's up to 8 channel PCM data, as opposed to compressed audio in DTS or AC3 formats.

Compressed audio is still required since not every player nor receiver can support uncompressed audio.
