It seems to me that President Obama, by appearing on Mythbusters, is making a statement about the importance of scientific method.

I think that is what we should come away with. a brief glance at the article states that as winners of sports competitions are rewarded with visits to the White House, winners of science competitions should receive equal rewards

I'll buy that. But I don't get why they're approaching a myth that they've already proven (false). Can't they think of another unproven myth to tackle? (I'd like to suggest one, but my mind is going blank at the moment. Pity, I'd thought of a good one just last week...)

I thought the topic was more about Obama wanting to get involved with this topic than if whether the topic was plausible or not, which makes the topic more political in nature than scientific. Besides, this is the lounge.

There's always Archimedes' Claw - I don't believe either that, or his heat ray, would have been effective.

I'm just glad this is bringing a higher level of awareness to the Scientific Method and to Myth Busting! Something we need much more of.

I thought so too, but I read somewhere that some people think that "Mythbusters" is dragging Science down with their "Let's blow it up!" schtick.

They could do a special on Archimedes and the gold crown (if they haven't already, I've never watched it.) I read a paper several years back (maybe in Scientific American?) that said that the difference in density for a gold-filled or gold-alloy crown vs. a pure gold crown would not have been measurable by water displacement using tools available at the time.

Maybe is the cynic in me, but I'll bet they picked the most popular theme they had on record and re-did it just for the prez. After all, they’ve already done two shows on it, it’s gotta be a winner.
