Curling up with an iPad

I've owned an iPad for about a week now. And I really like the freedom to read any format on it, especially PDFs. But no matter where I'm reading - bed, couch or table - I'm constantly fidgeting to find a comfortable position.

It's especially hard to read in bed at night, since I lay on my side. I've tried two of the stand cases so I don't have to hold it, but then I'm laying at an angle to the text. My current attempt at comfortability is:

iBooks or Kindle app in night mode, with 2 pages.
iPad in Landscape locked, but physically leaning against a foam cushion in vertially/portrait.

Since I'm in two page mode, I'm *almost* lined up to the text, but I still find myself tipping it to match the angle of my head on my pillow, which leads to shoulder and wrist cramps anyway. Sigh.

Has anyone found a good side-laying way to read on an iPad?

I've got the same problem as you.
To me, iPad is a bit too big and way too heavy, to comfortably hold it in my hand(s) for more than 1 hour.
My solution: I'm not reading on iPad, but on Dell Streak and since today on Samsung Galaxy Tab.
iPad I'm only using for web related stuff anymore.

We've recently purchased some iPads as a sales tool in my business, so I've had the chance to play around with them a bit. As much as I love the iPad, I too am worried about getting into a comfortable position with it for prolonged reading --- just a little bit too big and too heavy, perhaps? The thing that I love about my Sony PRS-505 is that I can fold the cover back and free-stand it like a tent when I'm reading while laying on my right side --- I don't need to touch it at all, except to turn the page. It's so convenient and comfortable that I've often fallen asleep while reading in this position.

But where there is a will there is a way. The iPad is such a nice addition to the world of book readers that I'm sure someone will figure it out, or make a simple little stand, etc. Hell, a friend of mine knew the guy who invented the poptop for soda cans and retired a multi-bazillionaire. Maybe this will be the inspiration for one of you to help us poor iPad slugs in our eternal search for comfort...

iPod Touch 4G. It may be small but it is an amazing reader. I no longer use either of my Sony's (PRS-300 & 600).

I've got a 3G (I was reading on smartphones well before E-Ink), and I like reading on it. But PDFs display much better on the iPad.

I lean my iPad against my bedside table (or hubby's pillow if he's not in bed) Or sort of rest it in the crook of my arm. In all cases, with the orientation locked!

I love reading on my iPad, but I don't do much on my side - hurts my neck. When I do, it is locked in landscape mode and leaning against a pillow or blankets to help hold it up. I usually read reclining on my back with the iPad propped on my stomach. That way while I am supporting it with my hands, I am am not holding up the weight. I can read for long periods with it propped on my lap if sitting or stomach if laying down.

I have a case where the front cover flips over and when in landscape mode, it creates a V shape which I then just prop up on my chest, and read lying on my back. It works brilliantly.

Here's my solution.

I lock my iPad to portrait, take it out of the case and use a thing called an X-band from Onhand. It let's me lay on my side holding my iPad easily with a few fingers. My thumb is free to swipe pages, and my elbow is on the bed. When I'm really interested in the book I can read for an hour easily. I think I learned about this from Andy Ihnatko.

I use my cuddle buddy pillow (not sure what they are called elsewhere) because it is so easy to shape a little ledge for my iPad to rest on. Depending on how I am lying, I will also lock the screen of my iPad so that any accidental movements won't move the page around.

I usually prop my iPad on a pillow or a two-buck plate stand. Works atop pillows, blankets, whatever. I didn't hold my Kindle for hours. I sure wouldn't hold my iPad for hours, either.

Either i lie on my back with the iPad resting against my legs, or i have it up against the wall and me on my stomach (With the girlfriend giving me back massage!).. I dont read much on the side, as i cant find a comfortable position - neither with a book or iPad.
