I have not jailbroken my kindle, nor was I planning to at this point. But can someone clarify the point of doing it before the 3.03 update?

No, I'm in Germany.
My problem is to connect to my WLAN itself. The next step would be to go online, but I can't go reach that point. Funny enough I managed to connect to my WLAN twice. I used this time to register my Kindle (I really wonder why Amazon said they send out the Kindles registered and then don't). After that withtout changing a thing disconnecting and connecting back to my WLAN simply does not work. No problem with any other computers/Ipod.

Tried this with 3.00/3.01/3.02/3.03.

I'm quite surprised of the performance of the browser after updating to 3.0.3., I now can log in and remain logged in for gmail, MobileRead, etc. Couldn't do that before the updating. Also I read somewhere on the forum that Facebook works again after the update.

Read the quote from NiLuJe in the first post of this thread. At this point the jailbreak will not work with the 3.0.3 update. I know NiLuJe is working on a new jailbreak but it may be a while before it is available. Better to jailbreak it now even if you don't hack it just yet.

Indeed a good advice.
For major events, like updating, or after some hard work, like ordering and ordening a lot of books, I always make a copy of the Kindlecontents to my PC and on a USBstick.
Actually had to resort to that copy once when I lost all my collections through some foolish move.

The update went smoothly for me, no problems. Performance seems a bit snappier, though I haven't tested it thoroughly.

Ahh - just couldn't help myself. The update was successfull. Can't say if it really changed performance yet. The next couple of days will tell.

That has always worked for me. Try selecting "enter other Wi-Fi network", select the "advanced" button and then enter your network info.

I agree with the previous poster in that my K3 will not connect with the SSID turned off. Turn it on, and the K3 connects within 5-10 seconds. I tried numerous times the instructions that you mentioned above with no luck. I have several other wireless devices on my network and they all work fine with the SSID off.

Yes, that was Amazon CS's theory. But if true, it was not due to impatience on my part. When the Kindle exited USB mode, it was already locked up, before anything could be done with the update file (corrupted or not). Because it was locked up, I could not restart normally, and because it would no longer boot up, there was no way to remove the update file short of a system reset. I never saw the usual update messages, so it is not clear it was even attempting to apply the update.

I am still on fw 3.02 but my Kindle 3 has always been able to connect to my wireless router with SSID off.

I have not felt any need to jailbreak my Kindle 3, but now I am worried I will be missing something wonderful if I decide to install the newest firmware. Seems rather silly, but I am going to have to think about this.
