Whats the purpose of sleep mode on the K3

Whats the purpose of sleep mode on the K3? I thought that with Eink devices you only use power when a page is turned?

Also, does anybody know how long the battery lasts listening to music?

Thanks

Kev

It puts the rest of the Kindle into low power mode.

Both of these........and if you don't like looking at the dead authors, you can put your own pics on by using directions found elsewhere on this forum,...........

I'm totally okay with all of the screensavers except Emily Dickinson who I think looks creepy...

I am probably one of the very few, but I rather like the pictures of dead authors. If I ever try the screensaver hack, I'd probably just add more pictures of dead authors. (O.K., maybe not.)

kevinofengland - I personally don't use my Kindle for music as I can't imagine it sounds very good - but since I've never used it for such, I am obviously just making unsubstantiated assumptions! I did a search for the Kindle 3's battery consumption while playing music (as did you, I am sure) and wasn't able to find much of anything. Here's a quote from a 2008 discussion about the Kindle 1:
Quote:
You can also put MP3 files onto the SD card and listen to them while you read. You can't select specific songs, it just plays through them, but I sometimes enjoy having background music while reading. Be aware this will drain the battery MUCH faster than just reading will. The battery will last for days if you're just reading, but when listening to music or audiobooks will drain within same day (more like the battery life on the Palm)
The Kindle 3's battery is much improved over the Kindle 1's, but I should think playing music on it must still take a lot more "juice" than just reading on it does.

I don't have music on the Kindle as it takes too much storage-MB that I need for books. Also I don't have high expectations of the sound-quality.

For screensaver I like Desiderius Erasmus (1466) best, the great humanist, als a fellow-Dutch person.

In addition to everybody else's helpful comments, one minor thing: there's also no graphical interface whatsoever for the music player. There are a few keyboard shortcuts (next and play/pause) but that's it. No way to select individual files, no file manager, etc.

Personally, I don't mind because I'd rather keep power consumption as low as possible (not having to worry about the battery is a big plus for me). Just thought I should mention it.

Yeah. Thats because you're using the background music feature which is very basic. If you put MP3 files into the audible directory instead of the music directory then they appear like regular items on the home screen. You can't play them in the background though whilst reading.

Wastes the battery so you have to charge it more often.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of music played on the k3 but a combination of music and internet use left me without battery in about 4 days.

Oh cool. I didn't know that. I think I'll still stick to using my Kindle strictly as an eBook reader but that is good to know. Thanks!

It turns off wireless, conserving power (but it will still turn wireless on periodically to check for new items & updates). The screen doesn't require power to display an image, but there needs to be some user action to wake it up from low-power mode, hence the screensaver images are put there to prompt sliding the power switch. Also confers some privacy (optionally password protected) if you walk away from your Kindle.

Audiobooks and music will drain the battery charge much more rapidly (I estimate 10-15x faster). Not a problem if you charge every day or two.

Doesn't it still index?
So like if you have a problematic book you converted, you might wake it to find yourself with a dead battery. I never use sleep mode myself, and wish I could turn it off so the power switch just went directly to off.
