software to remove pdf header, footer

is there any freeware / shareware which can trim pdf pages i.e. remove header & footer before placing the PDF in calibre library. seems to me that would be easier than manipulating regex to do the job later.

I read that adobe have a product, but there are so many variants of paid for acrobat type packages I'm not sure which one does this ?

I've been using http://www.pdfill.com/pdf_tools_free.html, to crop several pdfs.

Load up the original in normal viewer, turn on rulers, get measurments of header/footer, then load into PDFill Tools, and there's an option to crop, give it the measurements, and away it goes.

Very fast and effective.

great - so once it's calibrated then it will crop the whole book in one operation - & then I save the cropped output. ?
I don't want to do 500+ pages one at a time, !

the web site says that tools are free but editor is shareware. do I need the editor if all I want to do is crop ?

No it doesn't need the editor, the PDFill tools, does the operation.

The one to use is PDFill Tools (free).
And for cropping, using the '#4' option in the dialog as shown on the link

Once calibration, tick the 'All pages' box - will crop all your pages.

Calibre comes with the command line tool pdfmanipulate which has a crop option to crop any or all sides of a pdf, (top, bottom, left, right).

More help can be found using pdfmanipulate crop --help at the command prompt. This takes a moment or two and then shows the required syntax.

I hate to say this, but after years of Windows command lines really make my head hurt. Since most headers/footers seem to be fairly standard, why not simply have a function that crops them automatically, without resorting to command lines?

Because, if you get down to it, most headers and footers aren't as standard as they might look like.

Thanks, that was worth a read. I did try Briss, but as noted it bloats PDFs. PDFManipulate does exactly the job required without the bloating.

but the concept of CROP is standard & easy to understand.
I am using a different paid-for pdf to epub app now , purely because it has a user friendly crop option & calibre doesn't. it is much easier to crop a header then to regex it out of existence.

someone else has just posted a link to PDFscissors. which looks to be a freeware pdf cropper designed for removing headers & footers from ebooks.

a crop function built into calibre would be very useful - - not a geeky command line with data input' but a simple page image + drag top & bottom cut off point tool - just like this one in fact:

I much prefer typing a quick regex if I want to remove headers or footers than trying to fiddle with defining a cropping area on a trackpad. And what does your cropping tool do, by the way, if there's cruft you want to remove embedded in the middle of a page?

well, the thread topic is" remove headers & footer"s, not "remove junk from middle of page"

best of all worlds, in my view, would be to have both crop & regex tools

- we are not all regex whiz kids & many requests for help with specific regex syntax on this board are answered with RTFM, or equivalent
