Thanks Grace, ![]() As I recall, the last decent sized Earthquake you had on the Big Island, we on O`ahu suffered more than you did, what with the day long power outage. Last edited by wodin; 10-15-2010 at 03:09 PM. |

Reading this topic makes me think that either I live on another planet, or you...

See?
Your questions only confirms my suspicions. You are talking about all sort of preparations for coming winter, blackouts, storms, etc., i.e., natural disasters, as if we don't live on a civilised planet in civilised countries. I would understand Africans or South Americans talking about it but hearing this from Western people? I have no blooming idea what you guys are talking about. Why would you need this sort of knowledge unless you are actives travellers who do a lot of camping. Don't we all live in cities/towns in flats/houses fully prepared and equipped? ![]() I mean, I don't know anything about it at all. It has never occurred to me that i have to learn it. I have never had a need for it in my life (I lived in 3 widely spread countries across the globe). Last edited by astra; 10-16-2010 at 10:01 AM. |

where I live we are told to be able to sustain ourselves for up to a week with no resources even in the city. this is primarily due to the possibility of earthquakes. they figure that when the big one comes, and as I said before they are saying when not if, we will be cut off and everything will be shut down.
as for my own situation, we have been without power for a week plus. going to a hotel is not an option because a; there are not enough hotels for everyone and b; I have livestock. it is also 10 miles to the closest store (even if it would be open in severe weather). just getting there could be a huge issue alone! |

I understand all of it. Maybe I have read about it or seen on TV, but it sounds so bizarre to a town rat

What I remember of the Kobe earthquake in 1995 are images on the news of people complaining that the government wasn't responding to the their needs fast enough. They kept asking "where is the aid, where is the government".
That is what I saw. People standing or sitting, waiting to be helped. Was it the whole story? I'm sure it wasn't. But that was the image over, and over, on the TV. When I saw pictures of earthquakes in other parts of the world I saw common people digging others out by hand and with no government help. In the less civilized, and less sedate, parts of the world people depend on themselves and there neighbors. The loss of that is saddening. |

Probably you are right.

What you need, Astra, is a good invasion of the ole British Isles.
I mean, the worst you have to contend with now is a bit of damp fog or rain. Perhaps if you set out applications you could even choose the most suitable invader? ![]() |
