Well, the epub logo needs to be about publishing, not just e. So there should be at least a suggestion of a book about it. I think my biggest objection to this steaming pile is the fact it's all e, no pub. And the "e" is just the naked letter, with no meaning attached; nothing hints that the "e" means "electronic" and not "European" or "eternal" or "eukaryotic".

The green is good. Read an ebook, save a tree. But it has to evoke books, not Enron. |

Exactly. Even if one assumes that the 'e' is for electronic nothing about it says books. |

I also like it when customers do their own "market acceptance polls" ... "My wife thinks it needs more pink, and my brother-in-law says it needs to be bigger" ![]() I said it's "okay", not knowing what other designs were ditched in favor of this. But I agree with you that it could be a lot better. |

It's been suggested over at TeleRead that possibly focus groups should have been applied to this process... also suggestions that there may have been internal political issues at work, or an overemphasis placed on the winner's credentials. I don't have enough info to address the political or credentials issue, but I agree a larger focus group would have been advisable.

We do know that the IDPF gave itself about a week, 2 weeks max, to decide on a winner (so they could notify them in enough time for them to possibly attend their NYC conference). Is a week or so enough time to properly evaluate over 200 entries and pick a winner? In this case, I'd say "I don't think so." I would also love to see the gamut of entries, along with their explanatory text... but now that the winner has been chosen, what's the chance the IDPF will allow anyone to second-guess them? I expect that unless all of the entrants decide to post their designs in one place for evaluation, we will never see most of them, and therefore never know what the winner beat. (Oh... I'm sorry... I was supposed to have moved on. My bad.) |

So, i.e., as I see it, the winner logo is made by somebody who is a friend of someone else in the organisation (internal politics) and who can't be said "no" because s/he cries like a little child (credentials).

If relevant people (the biggest forum about the topic) tell them that they've chosen a crappy logo, they'd at least give it a second thought. |
