But if I needed too I can just turn up the brightness & read just fine. Back to the K3 though. I'm loving it. I had already invested in a couple of hundred kindle books so thats why I stuck with it I also have a library of books sitting on my PC that I can easily convert with Calibre. This Xmas I want to get my father a nook though. The reason why is so that he can rent from the library. He won't buy as many books as I do & have so I think this will be a better option for him. Also the wifi & 3G leave him unteathered & I don't have to go over for tech support. Keep it as simple as possible for him.
Make sure, before you jump, that you check the library he has a card for, and that they offer epub books that he likes.

Every library is different in its offerings. Some have no eboooks, some have a few....some, have tons.

I understand that for $15 per year, you can buy a membership from the Philadelphia free library, but very few offer non resident memberships.

As per my earlier post (dropped my Sony, what should I buy next?), I read through some of the other threads on the forum and decided to stick with the Sony. I check out a lot of books from our library, so this is an important feature for me. I also truly love the Sony reader products.

From there I decided on the Sony Pocket Reader, and have been delighted with my choice. It's little and sexy (the ooh feature for the non-techie crowd), the improved ink technology is great, I love the swipe page turn, the fast refresh, the double-tap for the dictionary, and the ability to underline and take notes. I also bought the cover with the light, which is much brighter than even last year's version (my husband's reaction was that I could use it as a search light). All in all, I couldn't be happier.

Hi folks, after a bit of lurking I have decided to join the dicussion.

In the real world I am an IT Network Administrator and as such I have a slightly skewed opinion of ereaders than most of you do. In my office our advice is this: your choice of ereaders depends on what is most important to you: most advanced technology, bragining rights (being able to say look what I have)or price (paying less for the device not more). If you want technology then its the Kindle, who seems to be devloping more advanced technology faster which is reflected in their device, if you are looking for something that is not necessarily better but something you can show off its the Kindle again since it controls probably 90% of the market. If you are looking for price its definetly not the Kindle, if you are looking for price we recommend the Alurtek. At $100 it undercuts the Kindle's price tag and is every bit as easy to work with.

soo the fact that the Sony e-readers integrates touch screen eink without sacrificing it's clarity and the Nook fuses together captactive color touchscreen LCD Technology with eink technology Their technology is behind the Kindle that uses buttons to navigate. That was the norm 10 years ago.?

OoooooooooKaaaaaaaaaay My wife is also in IT and she does not share the same view as you I'm afraid.

but if you want to baaaahhhh like a sheep. Buy a Kindle

Michigan State is playing Illinois. I am hoping that MSU has finally figured out that it is ok to keep winning games after beating Michigan and avoids its annual collapse.

I am really liking my SonyTouch PRS650. It is small and light, lets you turn pages with a finger swipe or a button, and lets you check out books from the library. That was a real deal-maker for me, since I read quite fast and do not want to buy all those books! I had tried other readers, and found that the page turns were too slow for my taste. My PRS650 has the fastest page turns of any I tried (nook, Kindle, older Sony PRS 600). I was also leary of getting something backlit like the iPad, because of the tales I'd read about eye strain. I have had no trouble with eye strain whatsoever, so far anyway.
Hope this helps you with your decision. Now I am looking for a cover that doesn't smell like an oil refinery (had a bad experience with one!)

After buying the PRS350 I was very pleased with it. The screen was crispy clear, reading felt as natural as possible on it and it was very easy to use. After using it for two days and seeing the new Ipod Touch with the high res screen however, the Sony seemed very limited. I was bothered by the fact I had paid 170 euros for a machine only capable of displaying ebooks, and it was all black/white. After this I returned the PRS350 and bought a Touch 8GB, it cost me only 50 euros more. After using it for some time, reading it on it was very pleasant. No eye strains (my eyes aren't the best), the screen size does bother but one gets used to it and managing books with Calibre + Stanza is very, very easy.

In conclusion, I'd advice to buy the Touch for anyone who is a light reader. I read maybe 2-3 hours a day depending on my agenda, it's pretty good. This post is not meant to bash ereaders, the PRS350 was great and the touchscreen was very responsive and intuitive, but it felt very restricted. I'll probably go for a medium screen ereader in the future, but not untill we get full color screens.

PS. this is my first Ipod ever, so fanboy feelings did not have any effect in my experience.
