Interesting. I can see it being legally challenged by the OFT; it sounds like a backdoor replacement for the net book agreement, which was ruled to be unlawful in the 1990s.

Intersting, that amazon state the agency pricing as having an effect on sales.

Personally, i'll probably buy one book at 15 rather than two at 9.
Well, we french are used to expensives books i'm afraid.

Potentially very bad news.

A good move on Amazon's part to keep the user-base informed so that they are aware this is not Amazon's doing and is beyond their control.

Let's hope the pricing policy is challenged and declared to be illegal.

The letter does not explain, though, why publishers who don't use the agency model (like my own small house) and fix a low price across the board as per all retail contracts since Amazon brought in their boilerplate Kindle contract ($5.95 on all titles in our case), they still increase that price themselves by two dollars in some non-US countries and over three dollars in others.
