That's actually a fairly common forum limitation because next to conversations (usually more like rants and flame-wars), religion is the fastest death to the healthiest of forums. I may not always agree with the moderators either but at the end of the day, its their place to run how they like; we are guests here.

Well, lessee. The Bible is considered by many to be a Classic, even by those who do not believe in it. We were discussing translations of Classics, which the Bible is. The last post prior to Poobear's post was a tongue in cheek comment about why many people believe diversity of language came about, necessitating translations. While the last one was a stretch, all were related to the original topic.

Yes, religion can become a heated topic but why not wait until it does instead of banning the topic outright? Banning it outright is censorship and I have serious heartburn with that!

Ok, now back to classic novels.

I started this thread with DUNE which despite much debate I still believe to be a classic.

From another genre completely, I would have to go with Catcher In The Rye as another one of my top classic novel choices. hmmmm, wait a second, it might be a novella now I think about it. I have to go check now.

If classic means the sort of age that's out of copyright, and best means most enjoyable, then I'd vote for the Count of Monte Cristo, or the Woman in White and/or the Moonstone.

A classic is something that will stand the test of time or has already done so. Discworld is a classic series because it will stand the test of time.

Actually I thought I was on topic. We were talking about Classic books and how well some are translated in particular. I just used the KJB as an example of how things don't always translate well from one language to another, something that another poster did with another book earlier in the topic. As I don't read any other language than English I used the only example I know of (of mistranslations) when making my point.
