And it is really interesting how he describes the animals and their behavior. But from what I have read here and there, there will be some sort of twist coming up later. But pssst, don't tell me yet

I'm not good at keeping up with Goodreads. I started one, but I don't use it for much and so it seems like a pain to go and add books to it. I've just started posting my reviews there as well, though, since I do know a lot of people use it, and I had an account anyway. There was something that I didn't like about the classification system either, I felt like there were too many steps to get things shelved? Maybe I just wasn't using it well.

I can't *wait* to read "Mockingjay!" I'm # 119 on the library waiting list now. I read the first two in basically three nights (full-time job, 3 young kids, I think that's pretty good! )

Grace:

Basically, you create whatever shelves you like at Goodreads, and then when you go to add a book, you
tick off which shelves it goes on. What's a bit of a pain is when you've already added quite a few books,
and then decide to create a new shelf (cuz ... well ... I guess I do have more than just a couple of books in that category after all); compulsive individuals feel compelled to go through all those books to add the new tag to a few of them.

Well, this was similar sort of stuff, but perhaps I wasn't quite in the mood for it. It seemed to be more concentrated on simple description of action with mecha than with plot. And the resolution at the end seemed to happen rather too swiftly. I was also concerned with the way things were resolved.

Spoiler:
Having a villain who apparently had a plan to ultimately benefit the human race that required atrocities in the short term was interesting. Having it turn out that the villain was actually an insane AI was unsatisfying, especially as that insane AI seemed to succeed in getting tens of millions of people to follow her. And having the rebellion stop just because that leader says to surrender also seems implausible.

Now for 1635: The Tangled Web by Virginia DeMarce. This is in Eric Flint's "Ring of Fire" universe, when a small american town has been mysteriously transported back to 1630s Germany. It is the first of those books that hasn't got any material in it by Eric Flint, either as co-author, or as a short story.

The "Ring of Fire" series certainly is a tangled web - lots of plot threads and characters. Sometimes it's a bit tricky to keep things straight. I hope that this book isn't too confusing as it's been a while since I read the last main book.

I just finished Mockingjay a couple of days ago. I, too, really enjoyed the series. I hope you like the Princess Bride, I did.

Recently finished Wasteland: Stories of the Apocalypse. I enjoyed most of the stories, but there were a few I did not like & skipped over after starting.

After seeing many recommendations on here I read The Penal Colony & really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendations.

I'm reading Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe; this is my fourth of his plays. Anyone who thinks he wrote Shakespeare is crazy --- VERY different styles! The fact that they both wrote in iambic pentameter (five iams -- da DAH, da DAH, da DAH, da DAH, da DAH) hardly make them the same person: people did that around 1600. Marlowe is coarse (see the video of his play Edward II: omigod, seriously X-rated) and highly visual in his staging, much more luridly than Shakespeare was.

This amazing discovery near the front of the Dr. Faustus play:

"What doctrine call you this, Che sera, sera,
What will be, shall be?"

The 1950s "Che sera, sera" song was inspired by a 16th century Marlowe play -- who knew???

I'm also trying to start Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose," which I thought I owned in book form but can't find it, so I downloaded a sample to the iPad from the Kindle app.

Very clever of Amazon to automatically know what gadgets you have as soon as you download their apps and to let you choose where to send the samples or the purchased books --- iPhone, iPad, or Kindle.

If anyone is interested, the first volume of Autobiography of Mark Twain: The Complete and Authoritative Edition is available on Kindle here. Got mine..

It will be available on the Nook on October 16 at almost twice Amazon's price.

Amazon UK: £16.50. I think I can wait until the paperback version comes out and the price drops.
