So, basically, the assumption that the cost in CPU time is way higher than disk I/O operations is correct?

Yes, disk I/O is completely irrelevant.

Yes, disk I/O is completely irrelevant.

Do you mean when doing conversions? Or are you saying that calibre is never (or at least very seldom) I/O-bound?

This valuable information. Is it in the User Guide section that describes this setting? If not I would suggest adding it so that in future when the question comes up you can just reference that section. Alternatively it could go into the FAQ.
