I just dropped my Sony PRS-505 on the floor, and it's now toast. So I'm trying to decide between the Sony and the Kindle. Sony's bookstore is not as good as Amazon, particularly for Canadian readers. But being able to use the Overdrive library system to check out books is a big plus in my world. I also like Sony's free and bargain basement book section. Not sure what to do next....

If you check out books from Overdrive regularly, then the Nook or Sony makes more sense for you. If the idea of checking out books is tempting but you rarely do so, the Kindle is the way to go.

With the Sony you can shop from many stores; you're not tied to the Sony store. I also prefer the form factor of the Sony device. It's smaller and IMHO sexier than the Kindle. Call me shallow if you must, but when I pull out a device I want people to say "oooh, what's that?" |

Honestly though can the Nook be used in Canada? I like the look of the Nook too but being in Canada really put me off on the usability of it

The Sony has modern technology with the touch screen eink The nook is still ahead of the Kindle, It joins LCD tech with eink tech to work (admitteldy after a few firmware update0 fairly seamless The Kindle you are still navigating via a joystick or a directional buttons. This is not by anyway shape or form modern technology. Compareably speaking. The Kindle is further behind than Nook and Sony. But their advertising and Marketing is FAR ahead of nook and sony Pearl Screen isn't exactly having High tech Gadget world on their ears and ooohhing an awwingg. It's simple an improved contrast ratio. Nothing more nothing less. |

With Calibre converting my books into a mobi library has been effortless and for the most part the conversions are very good. With my vision the improved pearl screen is a huge difference for me. The only complaint i have so far with the K3 is the low battery reminder really wants to make sure you don't forget. |

OK, I think my red Sony 650 is SO pretty! but the fast page turns, light weight, and ability to check out library books really were the reasons I chose it.
Now to find a good case/cover. The BookArmor felt good, and seemed to protect well, but stunk to high heavens. A nasty, strong, solvent-type smell. Has any other BookArmor owner run into that? If I send it back, do I have a chance of getting one that doesn't smell bad? |

The Kindle has a better better life than Droid X and the iPhone, it is by no means more technoogically advanced. My fathers $25 Samsung clam shell go phone gets three times as much better life than my Droid X. Battery life does not equal cutting edge technology. |

I never had a nasty smell from my Book Armor. I have the old model that doesn't have the click in feature.

I'm in the process of buying an ereader (I can't decide which one to get yet) and I find it interesting the ipod touch is mentioned here. How is the reading quality compared to say, the Sony PRS350? The small screen would not bother me, but I never conisdered the ipod untill now. I didn't even now reading ebooks on it was possible.

For the 9,000 time, a touchscreen does not make an e-reader more advanced. It is one feature that some people like and some people hate. I hate touchscreens and don't want one on my e-reader. Just because you think it is cool does not make the Kindle the least advanced of the readers. The joystick on the DXG works fine for me. As for more advanced, the Kindle has a functional browser, text to speech, and collections all of which are missing from the Nook. Personally, a battery draining, LCD screen that shows thumbnail size color book covers is not something that excites me. |

I'm one who also wouldn't want to use a touch-screen for an e-reader, finger prints are a rather offending mark.
Given that most of the time with any e-reader you're going to be wanting to move-forward to the next page, I prefer the way the K3 does it. Yes, when it comes to browsing and selecting links on a graphical page using the 5-way can be a bit cumbersome but given that I personally mostly buy my books via my PC (which then just appears on the K3) about the most I have to do with the 5-way is to select it from the book list. Touch screens are a wonderful technology and I dearly wish my 10" laptop had it so I could just touch-click on the WWW links I wanted to go to; however for an e-reader I do enjoy just holding it by the edges and being able to move back/forth with a simple in-position thumb press that doesn't impart my bodily oils onto the screen. We all have our reasons for our preferences and choices; these preferences don't imply a technological strata. |
