But first I'll start dear old mom's recommendation, Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.
Is that by Adrian Tchaikovsky? I read one of his in Deathray magazine (RIP!), quite good, about Wasps and other insects.

It is. You're right, it was a pretty good read. And original too. I'm glad I decided to finish it.

I'm reading "Book Business: Publishing Past Present and Future" by Jason Epstein, which I picked up at the library. It has an interesting view on why book publishing is in trouble, and he picked up early (this book was published in 2001) how ebooks were going to change the market and that publishers weren't going to adapt. On the flip side, he seems self-important and likes to name drop.

Just finished Alexandria by Lindsey Davis. This is a Marcus Falco mystery that takes place in, appropriately enough, Alexandria, Egypt during the Roman Empire.

Next, Stephen Hawkings The Grand Design

I finished today "Vanished Smile," "Book Business" (meh), and "Evil Under the Sun" by Agatha Christie (not one of my favorites by her). Now back to "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller, which I'm enjoying but having a hard time staying with (probably has more to do with the book's size and the fact that I have to finish 74 more books by the end of the year to make my goal. Yikes!)

Just finished "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson this evening for the second (or is it the third) time.

What is it with Stephenson and his endings? A fun book (especially for a computer geek like me) but the ending is meh.. It just feels like he gets tired of the story and just finishes it. Need to go back and read "Zodiac" again and see it ends the same way.

I saw that in the omnibus collection uploaded on MR by HarryT. I haven't read them and would like to know what you think.

Today, I wanted something SF and fun, so I am rereading Hal Spacejock by Simon Haynes.

I have had the same reaction to Stephenson's ending. But he's gotten better lately, the Baroque Cycle has a much more satisfying ending.

Just finished (and reviewed) "The Shadowing" by our very own MR member, foreverjuly (Jason Letts). I really like this series, and it gets a little darker in the second book (sort of like Harry Potter got darker as the books went on).

I'm reading a very obscure and expensive reference book called "The Regency Companion" by Sharon Laudermilk.

It's been out of print since 1980-something and copies sell for over $250. I bought one and had it scanned to PDF, then used ABBYY Transformer to OCR it and convert it to EPUB.

Worth every dime for those of us who need to know every detail of Regency England.

I've completed Stars Rain Down which turned out to be a crackingly paced story, but somehow I felt it was rushed towards the end and left to many unanswered questions.

I have downloaded "Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur: Complete Sherlock Holmes" from the Patricia Clark Library; the PRC version kindly formatted by HarryT. I've already read and enjoyed "The Lady in Scarlet" so am hoping for more of the same....

Forgot to say I finished Thigh High by Christina Dodd. Very funny romantic suspense, heavy on the humor. light on the mystery and romance. Some very funny sex scenes.

I'm glad I liked it because she is one of the nicest mega-bestseller authors I've ever met. I've sat next to her at a few book signings and she's a very fun, nice person.

I just finished "Evolution" by Stephen Baxter.

I had to struggle to keep reading it for the first 1/3rd of it. When I looked down and saw I was only at 37%, I couldn't believe it...

However, perseverance paid off. The book is wonderful, I wish I had the words.

This is what I learned.....yes, there is lots of fiction, I know...but listen up:

From the beginning of time, to the far future, the earth and its inhabitants will go thru constant changes.

Whether by humans or animals, the eco system will be changed, destroyed, and recover........altho not in a way we may wish.

This will/can happen in many ways.....by overgrazing, climate change, bacterial infection, natural catastrophes, stupid humans with their finger on the red button, we reside on a living planet, that still hasn't stopped moving around.

People and animals will adapt. The strongest will survive, the weakest will die out......completely.

This has happened over and over and over, and will continue to happen....until our sun novas and the Earth itself will die. People will continue to evolve as well, and adapt to those changing conditions.

The story has some wonderful future scenarios. What a wonderful storyteller!

I think this is the 3rd book I"ve read that I would have never thought of reading without recommendations from people here.

Thanks, all!
