Slightly puzzled by that, Gibbo. Gibraltar is in the EU, and the EU is an internal "free trade" area. Why did you have to pay customs duties? Assuming that you were charged French VAT on your order, there should be no other duties payable.

Gibraltar is not in the EU Customs Union, it's an oversea territory of the UK, just like the Channel Islands (which are crown territories & also not in the EU). Customs duties would be payable but VAT would not be. If they've charged you VAT ask for a refund of same, assuming you are resident of Gibraltar.

As Tulkas says we're not in the customs union so custom duties are payable and Bookleen didn't charge me VAT.

Now I'm confused. If you look at messages #37 and #38 on page 3 of this topic I thought you said there that you thought that you should have been charged VAT?

Ah the wonders of 'opt-outs' lol Gibraltar is a member of the EU as a UK overseas terrority but specifically excluded from the EU customs union. The Channel Islands and indeed the Isle of Man are self-governing CROWN dependencies and are not part of the EU at all. There is nothing more frustrating for residents of these terrorities being charged VAT by companies who don't understand the subtle differences. Fortunately Bookeen appear to be better informed.

Just received mine today.

There was a one day hold up from FedEx. They said US Customs required them to know whether the device memory was from Korea. Finally got the info from the company.

Two initial questions. The Quick Start Guide item 5 indicates there should be a manual in the Library. Mine doesn't have the manual. I've emailed the company but have not yet heard back. I guess I just need to get a copy via email so I can download it from my PC into my Cybergen.

Second issue - what is the warranty? There was nothing in the box except the Quick Start Guide.

If someone could email me the manual, that would be great.

I've put a sticky thread with the download URL at the top of the forum.

Mine arrived as predicted on Monday and hopeful can have some more time to play it over the weekend. Ordered to deluxe packed and everything was in it (except of course the manual)

The only question / remark I have is about the leather casing, because with it I can't see the activity light... is this correct?

That's right, you can't see the light with the leather case. It doesn't actually show anything useful, though, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I, too, have ordered my CyBook. Order# 4233. Shipping Date: 5 Dec. 2007. This forum is feeding my obsession until December. I plan on sticking with my direct order even though the CyBook will shortly be orderable in the U.S. through NAEB. This will be my first eink device. I used a Palm TX as my reader previously, so I have a lot of Palm eReader format books with DRM. I wish I had a way to convert them to Mobi.

I got tired of working myself up over the wait for this reader and since it is for my wife I told her that I had ordered it for her, showed her the thing on the web site, pointed out the order details and left her to it. Let her get in a state over it..

Still, I sure look forward to seeing it.

Question Have I really made the right choice?

So with 20 days to go until my projected ship date, I am struggling with some post-decision doubts:
  1. Is there is no way to easily import my extensive Palm eReader library?.
  2. Will my unit be one of those that suffer early hardware problems?
  3. Is the Cybook Gen3 a better choice than The Sony 505?
  4. Will I get hit by any of the reported firmware bugs?
  5. Should I wait and order from NAEB?
Please help me rationalize my purchase decision while I wait!

If you need mobipocket format, go for CyBook Gen3, otherwise go for Sony (my final opinion after some thinking).
