Just ordered a Marathon Stick after getting problems with my muscles in the legs when running. This stick is supposed to ease cramped muscles. Couldn't find it in Oslo so I had to order it from the U.S so it will probably not arrive before November.

Just got back from Humid Restaurant, where I had the pork belly, the spatchcock and the pannacotta (and a cocktail called a 'Savoy'...champagne, ruby red grapefruit juice, lime and Campari). A rare night out to eats, with a visiting friend (who kindly picked up the tab). Very nice...will go there again (especially as they have a decent vego menu too, rather than the usual, single-option "choice" most have, and so I can take my brother out for a good feed).

Cheers,
Marc

Anyway, it was my first big barefoot walk. We went on a long walk the other day, wearing shoes, and about halfway through my feet were starting to rub and ache. Today, barefoot, through rough mixed path (gravel, dirt, tree roots, grit, sand, mud, water, bitumen and cement in spots) and my feet are slightly sore on the pads, but only in a "you've been walking a lot on gravel" kind of way. They handled the walk just fine (no "structural" aches). So, the barefooting is working, toughening the soles, and causing less/no foot ache. If it was more socially acceptable, I'd not wear shoes again (though the bindii in people's lawns/nature strips is always a problem). As it is, I hardly ever do (shoes almost never, thongs/flipflops for shopping, etc.).

Cheers,

Looking at my feet and realising that having spent a large part of the year out doors in birkis, flip-flops, crocs(*) and wide toed clogs, and barefoot indoors, I may never fit into normal shoes again.

However, my DMs still fit, so I can buy the couple of pairs I've spotted

(* fugly as anything, but very comfy on pavements/anywhere there's no thorns And brilliant in rain)

Yes, they still have the ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn. I think a couple of new ones opened up since I last visited an ostrich farm (while still at school) although I think the industry is much reduced in comparison to 10 years ago.

I'm impressed! The barefoot movement is catching on a little bit in this area, but not hugely. There was a man who used to run barefoot regularly on the military installation that I recently retired from, but other than that I've only seen a few people barefoot. (Well, I take that part back. I DO live in Georgia, and lots of people don't wear shoes, but that's sort of a cultural thing. I remember as kids we were allowed to start going barefoot for the summer on May 1, and sometimes didn't put shoes back on until school started again in September. But I digress.) Anyway, a good friend of mine wears "minimalist" shoes -- either homemade huaraches or Vibram FiveFingers, which we affectionately refer to as her gorilla shoes. She swears that her overall gait and comfort is much improved since she has moved to less supportive shoes.

Thorns in crocks are a pain. For real. You walk normally, happy as you should, then you put down your foot on a stone and get that sharp prick. I found a neat way to get them out with a pair of pliers, after bending around the thorn. I got the voice that they were closing down so I run out and got an extra pair. Unluckily I did not find the fuchsia, but only silver. Usually for Xmas I get elegantly fitted with those house things that actors wear in costume productions, Moroccan leather with silk lining like, they go directly to my father in law. Crocks for me.
Birkis I cannot wear, like Dr. Martin, to much pain to soften them. For me is Crocks and old tennis shoes all year around. Going to town is mostly Mephysto, or Rossetti if i have to dress (ah ah), but as I am thinking of changing my look radically I might go for something more Northern Germanic, like sandals with thick woolen socks.

Clogs eh? how do they work going around? that would be nice.

Birkis I find surprisingly easy to wear - took me maybe an hour total to get used to them, and at some point after that the soles weren't noticeable. There's a range of the 1460 (the short boots) of Dr Martins which are in soft, "worn-in" leather - which took no breaking in at all.

Sandals with thick woolen socks sounds fine (*) - but definitely Germanic and not at all Italian!!

The clogs are great - I've cheated a bit in that the ones I have have thick, soft soles, not the traditional wooden ones. But I've only once sent one flying from my foot!

(* Do not ever look to me for fashion advice, btw. I do eclectic, scruffy and odd, but not fasionable )

Curious minds (and cramp suffering legs) want to know - how does that work? Is it something you use once the cramp has set in (in which case it might be perfect for me and my 3am calf cramps), or is it to prevent cramps? (I'm guessing the former...)
