No, really. It's gotten worse over the last 10 years or so on which I blame cellphone usage, but the trick is (and always has been) to know where you're going. Things happen fast in Chicago traffic so you have to know in advance what you're going to do. The line of traffic behind you isn't going to wait for you to figure it out; the time for that was when you were still at home planning your trip. There isn't a window-mounted GPS fast enough to handle the inbound Ike or the Tri-State, and you'd better know where the construction is happening before you leave, because I guarantee you it's happening somewhere.
I was doing a job at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and getting ready to fly back. mapquest told me my drive to the airport should have take "x" (I think about an hour and a half, when I got there I had landed at 1030 pm and by the time I got my car it was quite late, so very little traffic). it actually ended up taking 4 hours. I missed my flight. as it turned out I was extremely lucky. it was the spring that airlines were dropping like flies, something was going on with the baggage handlers, flights were cancelled or held up all over the country, there was a major winter storn going through the middle of the country. I would have had a connection in Minneapolis, and as it turned out that airport was closed for about 12 hours. the travel department at my company got me one of the last rooms available and I just chilled. the next day I was re-routed through Kansas or something, and finally got home in time to repack and leave for a 6 week project in Hawaii

I don't trust GPS.
Optimum time from my sister's house to mine, barring traffic, following the GPS route, is 40 minutes. Real time: about an hour.
Using common sense, it takes me 20 minutes.

it wasn't gps, it was mapquest ;op. anyway, I know to not rely on any of them exclusively, but in this case my time was more than doubled

My youngest sister loves Mapquest.
Whenever she takes a trip, she uses it.
My brother in law, who does the driving, ignores her.
They make good time that way.

when you are flying every week into a new city to work, you need to take advantage of what is at hand. the directions were fine. the traffic was a nightmare

I can understand that.
There is a local news channel here that does traffic and weather updates 24/7.
It really is a godsend because it has up to the minute traffic info from the eastern tip of Long Island to Manhattan. Including train service.
Verizon can't give away their cable service for free out here because they refuse to carry that channel.

NY1?

Yeah, TimeWarner is promoting it for all they're worth, and highlighting people who tried FIOS, discovered NY1 wasn't available, and switched back.

FIOS isn't available where I am, but there are a plethora of Verizon trucks in the area working under the street, so that may be about to change.

And it doesn't matter what Verizon is willing to do: I can't see TimeWarner giving them access to a feed for the channel if Verizon did want to carry it.

GPS's provide unintentional humor.

I like the cases when truckers use them to navigate. The GPS will give a correct route, but it won't mention little details like the clearance of the bridge the truck has to pass under.

Seeing a stuck 18 wheeler, with half the roof of the trailer peeled away by a low bridge is a source of grim amusement. Thinking about how the driver will explain it to his dispatcher is too.

News12 Long Island/Traffic and Weather.

We get a few of those truck/overpass incidents.
Mostly, it's people missing the highway exits/entrances.
