I can't remember. I don't feel comfortable using just the first name, especially if the first name is an initial

More like, "...both Brown and Tolkien write twaddle, but Tolkien's twaddle is at least literate..." (I made that up too, and any resemblance to actual persons either living or dead is entirely coincidental). What's wrong with "...both Fred Brown and Percy Tolkien write twaddle..."? In fact, the subsequent mentions of an author after their full name has been given can be by means of just their surname, without setting my teeth on edge.
