What a helpful forum this is!
I found this out by accident when I registered my wife's reader to my account (back when we had seperate accounts). And i screwed up her purchased books. Registering it back to her account fixed it.

You can leave your 500 registered to your account and leave all the purchased books on it. Then once your friend is finished reading the ones he wants to read, he can register it under his own account and then the books you've purchase don it will no longer be readable and all he hs to do is delete them from the reader.

When she has finished reading the books would she be able to register the Reader in her name without me having de-registered it first?

As a matter of interest is it possible to tell whether a Reader has ever been registered previously before registering it in your own name?

You'd have to de-register it from your account first.

I'd guess it might be ... if you had internal access to Sony's database.

You can see in the About screen if the Reader is registered with the Connect store.

igorsk - I checked the About screen as you suggested. It indicates if the Reader is registered, but I was wondering if you can tell whether the Reader had been registered before eg If the Reader is showing that it isn't registered can you tell if a) it has never been registered or b) it was registered and then de-registered. I hope that makes sense.

ps or btw - by checking the About screen I discovered that the strange symbol on the Reader represents ae - though I still don't know what the ae stands for.
