Calibre + Kindle = R/O
Hi,
I received a Kindle about six hours ago and now I can't add files either through Nautilus or Calibre. Being that other people have been having similar problems I think it's a Calibre issue. I haven't quite found the discussion on how exactly to unlock the device. It's duplicable. This happens every time I try to mount the Kindle. [Errno 30] Read-only file system: u'/media/Kindle/metadata.calibre' Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 67, in run self.result = self.func(*self.args, **self.kwargs) File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 287, in _books mainlist = self.device.books(oncard=None, end_session=False) File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/devices/kindle/driver.py", line 177, in books bl = USBMS.books(self, oncard=oncard, end_session=end_session) File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/devices/usbms/driver.py", line 164, in books self.sync_booklists((bl, None, None)) File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/devices/usbms/driver.py", line 303, in sync_booklists write_prefix(self._main_prefix, 0) File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/devices/usbms/driver.py", line 301, in write_prefix with open(self.normalize_path(os.path.join(prefix, self.METADATA_CACHE)), 'wb') as f: IOError: [Errno 30] Read-only file system: u'/media/Kindle/metadata.calibre' |

No, it's not a calibre issue. The fact that your Kindle is being mounted at /media/Kindle means it isn't being mounted by calibre.
Whatever is auto mounting your Kindle is mounting it read only. A common reason for that is file system errors on the disk being mounted. |

I can't even add bookmarks on the machine. It's really R/O locked - not just a mounting issue. Calibre is the only software I've used on this virgin machine. It froze up while converting a big PDF but wasn't uploading at the time, so don't see an obvious reason why it's doing this.

...trying what I think is a factory reset now.
UPDATE: that worked. If anyone else gets this error, hold the switch back for 20 seconds. Last edited by trey333; 10-07-2010 at 04:48 PM. |

all calibre does is copy files to/from the machine using normal filesystem calls. there's no way it can cause this.
