You know I hear this particular claim a lot, but I wonder how true it is? Lots of ebook readers that are fairly light, including the new Sony PRS-650 (which has both an SD reader and a Memory Stick reader) are fairly light... in fact, the PRS-650 is (according to the MR Wiki) lighter than the Kindle3. So is the Kobo which also has an SD card reader.. and the difference in the thickness of the Sony and the Kobo conpared to the Kindle is essentially negligible (Kobo .04 inches thinner and Sony .04 inches thicker). A user replaceable batter I can see having a negative impact, but my guess is that removing the SD card reader was a cost cutting move by Amazon.

Okay.......I was one of the die hard "Damn you Amazon how DARE you take away my sd card slot!!" people.

Then, after 2 1/2 yrs, loading my k1 up with almost 900 books, and still barely scratching the surface of my 2 gb card, I realize, that for me, anyway, the new K3 3000 to 3500 book capacity will do me just fine, thank you..

Realize, I have only books, not music or audio loaded onto it...

and yes, its considerably lighter and thinner than the K1.

As for the battery, I found a utube video that shows just how easy it is to do myself....as for the warranty, after one year its gone anyway, so why bother sending it in? Its not brain surgery.

Oh, I am not saying that you really need to expand the memory... particularly not on the 4GB Kindle 3. At least not if you use your reader for ebooks and not audiobooks and/or music files. I merely was questioning the notion that the SD card reader was taken away to make the Kindle lighter and thinner.

Subjective or not, I'd argue that my opinions have more validity than someone who owns one and just reads the spec sheet of the other or uses the other for just a few minutes in a store somewhere.

I also buy audible.com audio books. Currently, I listen to them on my iPod touch. Kindle has support for them, Nook does not.

Nook has a easily replaceable battery in case of permanent battery death. Kindle I read you have to send it in (yes, supposedly you CAN replace the battery yourself, but I am not that technology advanced and not sure if I could trust myself to be able to do this, plus, I'd be afraid of damaging the device).

Can you see my dilemma?
Actually the amount of screws you have to undo is about the same in both. And getting the back off the K3 is only a little more demanding.

ahhh yes your complaints that black trim between the bezel and the screen created towering 12 noon shadows that would make the sky scrapers in mid town Manhatten envious. ( I think that one had every nook owner scratching their head and doing a "Saaaaaaaaaaaaay Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?) and the white bezel was like looking directly into the sun.
and anyone who dared disagreed with your bizarre assement was a shrill

Yeah we remember your "subjective" tirade.

You are making a lot of assumptions. The most important is that you are the only person here to have extensive experience with both readers. A lot of the posters here have owned multiple devices so might in fact have more experience than you do.

Ultimately, I am sure that the Kindle is a better choice for [b]you[i]. That being said, your experiences are by no means universal. I think we have adequate testimony that there are many people who like their Nooks quite a lot. The simple fact of the matter is that almost any reader is going to find at least a few people who like it quite a lot, including readers that generally get poor reviews.

My particular objection was how you characterized Nook advocates as being shills for B&N. They like the Nook more than Kindle 3 or the Sonys or the Pocketbooks, they might even be Nook fanboys, but that doesn't make them shills.

I got exactly what and who you were referring to, but I totally agree with bill mchale.

I know that, to you, seeing the same person going in any nook vs thread and giving long posts on its advantages may be annoying to you. Maybe even to others who regularly read all these different threads, I don't know. But many/most of these threads are created by people who may not have read any other threads in depth and want info on their particular predicament, regardless if it's been covered before. So to those posters, the same people posting the same posts over again are giving the thread starters new info and opinions.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that really, this particular forum is just the same group of users, including you, posting their opinions over and over again in new threads that are really the same as a million other threads before it. That's the nature of the forum. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Call me a Kindle Shill. I am cool with that. It is nice to see so many people who are passionate about reading and gadgets.

I have a guess about who was being referred to. Like I said, they may be a nook fanboy, but I don't see any evidence that they are a shill.

Bingo... though, perhaps we should get a sticky for kindle versus nook (and kindle versus sony) since that is a pretty common question that gets asked.

Ok I'm stumped who's he talking about?

I don't care he can call me a shrill all he wants. I have on quite a few occasions recommended new Sony's for note and annotations, simple the best out their right now. Ipads and even *gasp* a Kindle DX as well for PDF's. Along with the new Kobo and the Entourage Edge for students.

I just don't think the kindle is the end all be all, in fact out the three top 6 inch I think it's third but that's no shock to anyone here. I think it's the least technologicaly advanced. But through great marketing and a great store platform and the lack of advertising on the other's its the top seller.

But because I don't agree with his love of the Kindle I am a shrill.

Oh well, though I did know a kid in college who a actually a paid "Troll" for local electronics company. He lure people in with at first how happy he was with a particular store (to build credibility) and then come up with all sorts of ways to tear the store done. Odd way to earn book and beer money but I guess it paid the bills. Paid trolls are still quite common in not more so.

I use audible.com as much as I read regular books. I have found that I have no desire to listen to them on any of my readers. I have 2 Sansa Clips that I keep my audible books on (on of which is attached to my tank top as I type this). I often d/l the audible version of a book I'm reading just so I can get some other stuff done while I can finish the book I'm reading.

The only thing I've found useful of the audio jack on the reader is to listen to wordless "reading" music, like classical or new age. If you use the audio jack for that, it's perfect. If people are always trying to talk to you when your reading, having the earphones plugged into the reader also seems to stop such annoying behavior.

This might help as I have owned both the Nook and the Kindle 3:

I had a Nook as my first e-reader. I really loved the device. That said, I now have a Kindle 3. The Nook screen broke, the bottom left corner has a frozen image on it and there are horizontal and vertical "white" lines that cover the screen making reading impossible. I played with a K3 in Best Buy and it was a no brainer (they had Kindles, Nooks, and Sonys right there and the glare on the Sony screen was a deal-breaker).

A few things I disliked about the Nook now that I compare it to the K3 would be:

Size, I like the smaller form factor of the K3, (especially how thin the thing is) without losing screen size!

Weight, the K3 is just plain crazy light. The Nook feels like a brick in comparison.

Screen contrast really is noticeably better on the K3.

Page turn is much much faster on the K3; the Nook flashes a bit too much for my liking. The Kindle pages turn faster than I turn pages in a paper book.

Battery life is just plain amazing. I sideload all of my books so I got the Wi-Fi only version and leave it turned off. It really does last a month on a charge with Wi-Fi off.

The touchscreen of the Nook was killer, but honestly I didn't swipe all that much, I used the side buttons so no change there.

File format support is negligible for me, I don't get books from the library so Epub means nothing to me. If I get a book in Epub I'll just spend 15 seconds or so converting it for free to .mobi in Calibre.

B&N includes Google free books in it's claim about available books, as for store bought, Amazon has more books available than strictly B&N books.

The K3 has Text to Speech so it'll read the book to me if I so desire.

Purely visual but I like graphite better than white.

My Nook had a habit of every so often, during a page turn, it would flash for like three or four seconds before actually displaying the page. Not very common but kills my pace when I'm reading.

The Nook has an SD slot which is awesome but honestly, I can put 3,500 books on my K3. If I need more than that, I'll just remove some books. Me personally, 3,500 books is WAY more than enough. I have an mp3 player for music and audiobooks.

Kindle 3 support file organization (I think the newest Nook update includes this though) and text searching of books. It also comes with two full dictionaries pre-loaded.

One thing I do dislike about the Kindle 3 is it does not use page numbers.

Both are awesome devices but I think, from owning and using both devices, the Kindle 3 is hands down better.
