Did you know......we have thousands of free books, public domain and independent authors, better formatted than Amazon OR Bn......or PG, or Google. Our members correct errors, delete unneeded pages, and format them for your all devices. there is also www.feedbooks, and www.manybooks.net As for 'functionality'........its a book reader. what more do we need? |

Got my K3, downloaded them, and they were pretty much all horribly formatted. Thank goodness for this place and the members who have done all the hard work of formatting (and manybooks and feedbooks which I suspect is somehow automated, but still much better than Amazon, which seems to somehow be even worse than straight from Gutenberg. ) Still even here, one issue is that in a lot of cases the epub version is done better (or the mobi version isn't done at all), so you have to download that and convert with a kindle |

Right, but don't assume that the local library is the only place you can turn. Often different counties will allow you to get a library card as long as you live in the same state... and in some cases, as long as you live near enough the state. So you can really cast your net fairly broadly in terms of looking for library access. I believe someone pointed out in another thread that the Philadelphia library allows people to join from anywhere for the rather reasonable rate of $15 a year. On the flip side, there are so many free ebooks out there between Pub Domain and publisher freebies that I never worry too much about finding something interesting to read. -- Bill |

Thanks for all the responses, everyone.
One question is still unanswered, though. Is one better than the other at the moment, at handling PDFs? If yes, which one? |

Should I just go with the Kindle 3, then? I don't really have much worries about library books.
And it seems Kindle 3 is the way more people tend to be going, specially because the nook and k3 are so similar... |

That's seems awesome. I don't have an overdrive library anywhere near me in Michigan. Any place else like that? I went with the Nook myself. I prefer epub as it is the almost-universal standard now, I like the memory card slot (useful for mp3s, pdfs, and other big files in the future) and the replaceable battery. And with Android there is always potential for other cool stuff on it. I hate DRM so I buy very little from the B&N store, but they've had some awesome B&N published classics for free this summer. My wife went with the Kindle 2. She loves Amazon and is willing to buy with DRM (I warned her...you think she would have learned after a couple of itunes debacles over the years). It doesn't really matter which one you choose. If you're like most of us here, you're probably going to buy another one sooner or later just because they're such cool toys.
(Eagerly awaiting my Sony 350; I could not resist the temptation any longer - lol). |

I have a Nook and I'm just waiting for holiday price wars to buy a K3. I'll probably keep the Nook for the occasional library checkout but, as good as my local library is, the eBook collection is mostly romance and self-help
![]() Biggest reason I'm switching. It turns out that my non-fiction and boutique publisher reading habits are not supported by B&N. I continually run across books only available through Amazon. The second biggest reason -- I have a huge preference for the speed and great search functions of the Amazon website. I find B&N's website to be very clunky and slow with poor search ability. Your mileage may vary ![]() A good way to figure out which you prefer. Download both Amazon's and B&N's free eReader software to a device you already own like your home computer or smart phone. Then start filling them with free sample chapters and free books. Then when you purchase an eReader, you'll already have content for it and you'll know that you picked the web storefront that you like the best. |

Yeah the Phila Pub. library thing is FANTASTIC if you live in an area where your library isn't on the ebook lendging train yet. The $15 annual fee for out of staters really is a bargain seeing how it pays for itself and then some after two books. I'm so glad you mentioned the MP3 and the memory card slot. People keep saying well 1500 books or 3000 books is more than enough. Well yes I guess in a general (though your library does fill up quicker than you might think) But my wife is a perfect example of why expanision memory card slots are great. She loves to listen to books on CD on her way to work. She has a fairly long drive. So instead of constanstly buying more and more books on CD's she can either download them from various shops on line including our home platform of BN and even the Public Library in MP3 format. Click and drag over to the Nook. Hook up a male to male 3.5 headphone wire and plug it in the Aux on the car stereo and she's good to go with her books on disk. MP3 takes up alot more space than books do so, if you do like to listen to books on CD and take advantage of the MP3 support, memory expansions slot are great. ohhh but wait that's another thing Amazon refuses to let you have ![]() ![]() |

I would buy a Kindle because it is lighter, has a better screen, has better battery life, has a better dictionary, is easier to us for taking notes and highlighting, has better customer service, and has a much better book store. |

But you have to be the final judge. it's your money, your eyes not ours. Go back and play and test drive both and go with the one YOU like. You don't even know us so you shouldn't have any loyalty to us, let alone determine which product you should buy. I for one have tested driven both and found the Nook to be a MUCH MUCH better product. IMHO it blows my mind that people choose the Kindle (here in America) over the Nook. Someone on the otherside the coin will Love the Kindle and can't believe people buy the Nook. |
