I like a bit of isolation and music. I *can* write in other environments, but given the choice, it's isolation and continuous music.
The kind of music matters. Not so much in style or genre, but in familiarity. When writing, it helps me focus if I already know the music. New music, especially new music I *like*, is too distracting. So I explore new music when I'm *not* writing. -David Last edited by DavidRM; 10-05-2010 at 09:14 PM. |

I don't like music. I like either total silence at home either in my living room or bedroom or I sometimes like to write in a coffee shop.
I would like a room with an ocean wave sound, but I probably won't ever be able to afford that. Ann |

In the sunrise. The house is quiet and only the birds singing.
Sitting in the morning gown with a cup of Swedish black coffee, using my Dvorak keyboard, or Svorak as it called in the Swedish version. ![]() |

Wow. I wouldn't even know where to start. I think I'll stick with the Qwerty keyboard for now.

![]() The only benefit with the qwerty layout is that You can type the word "typewriter" on the top row. Hmmm.... That I'll feel isn't really up to date. ![]() |

I sometimes forget to turn my music on when writing. But not often.
I use the music as a sort of "auditory cocoon" to surround me. It shields me from external distractions and helps me focus on the writing. That's why it needs to be familiar music. If it's new music, then the music is a distraction. On Dvorak keyboards: I've sometimes been tempted to experiment with the "other" keyboard layout. But I never have. On the other hand, my typing isn't the slow part of my writing. ![]() -David |

Great thread idea!
I like coffee shops too - movement and a little noise help me feel inspired and not antsy. Perfect places: a city balcony where there is a lot of street action, and an oceanfront balcony where I can watch and listen to the waves. |

I also use music to make a barrier against noise. I just plug in the headphones and listen to one of my music downloads (legal downloads of course) while I think and type. I love how compact and lite my netbook is. It's an emachine from the Acer group of computers. I got it some 9 months ago and haven't had any major problems with it at all.

I'm the odd writer out -- I cannot write with music on. When music's on, it sucks all of my focus away from music. I'm a big music fan (probably more of a music fan than a writing fan) so there's no such thing as "background music" for me.

I'm also a big music fan, more so than writing, although the two are so different. I didn't used to be able to listen to music when writing, but over the last few years I've begun to almost require it. The music becomes part of the inspiration, but it almost exclusively has to be something instrumental or with nearly unintelligible lyrics (like Radiohead) so that I don't focus on the words.

This is a great thread!
For me, I like to write with music in the background. I find music enhances the subconscious on some level. I don't play it loud, but I usually will have something playing in another room quietly in the background while I am writing. It is fun to go back and see what I wrote and what I was listening to as I was writing it. |

Over at NaNoWriMo one whole board is titled "NaNo Soundtracks" and it's where people post about what music they listen to when writing and which music fits the theme of their writing project etc. We are a species that has a emotional response to sound.

I have to have total peace and quiet. My TV is turned off until I decide I'm done with writing. Even though I prefer to write longhand, its gotten too expensive to write that way, so I type it all out on computer, where I make tons more mistakes than if I transcribed it from notebook to computer.
