I thought everyone knew the secret to living through getting a tattoo - get well lubricated with your favorite alcoholic beverage. Besides giving you courage, it tends to deaden your skin sensitivity to pain.

I don't know about elsewhere, but my tattoo artists here in Texas told me they were required by law to turn away anyone they suspected had been drinking. They did say, however, that I could drink away the pain after.

When I can find a tattoo parlor that will first administer general anesthesia, THEN I might get a tattoo. At the same time, I might go for an ear piercing, but maybe not. The thought of the pain afterwords is somewhat daunting.

15 years ago there were still signs up in onsens (hot spring resorts) and local sentos (neighborhood bath houses) that said "No Tattoos Permited." I haven't seen any of these signs in the last few years, and more and more younger (under 40) Japanese are sportingtattoos today, especially the under 25 crowd. Lots of tats, lots and LOTS of various piercings. Lots more of them are traveling abroad to beach areas where tats are so visible and easy to get. Times change even in Japan. Heck, 15 years ago one had to go to a doctor to get their ears pierced in Japan. Now you can get it done in shopping malls.

The half-shirt Yakuza tattoos look very different from the sunbursts, butterfly, flowers, and aboriginal designs I see the young folk wearing. I doubt people here still assume anyone with a tattoo is a gangster, and the Yakuza have their own onsen and sentos anyway.

The fellow who did my tattoo said he won't work on folks who are inebriated.

I didn't think the pain was all that bad. The slap on the tat at the end of the session was a bit of a wake-up call, however. Still, even that wasn't any worse than a slap on a sunburn.

I thought that has more to do with excess bleeding. A higher blood alcohol level causes excessive blood flow.
