System backs up daily to the *secondary drive, but see below !

Occasionally (and it's only happened since W7) boot-up cannot find my system drive. If I disconnect my *secondary drive, then boot-up is okay.

On this occasion this disconnect method did not work, and the only way to boot up was with the installation disc in the DVD drive. On further examination it appears that my external drive can now upset the boot.

Well, yeah, if the system thinks it's a bootable drive (even a USB thumb-drive) it can hang up. I've had that happen...

I was sent out there for a 3 month project a couple of years ago. left in late September. I had all sorts of Currier and Ives images in my head, and brought what I thought was appropriate fall into winter clothing. boy was THAT a mistake! that's what I'm worried about - not the upgrade itself - that was a clean install, but the recent Windows updates may have reconfigured something in the boot-up - and I'm not too sure what .... even to the possibility it has "put files" onto the non-system disc.
I may find out tomorrow when I switch back on.

Have you checked your boot menu (not sure how to get to it in 7) to see if there is a new sequence of devices checked during boot-up?

Everything in the boot menu is as it should be. USB drive is not even mentioned as a boot device, just HDD (1st) and then DVD!

Here are the exorcism instructions:

Wear black.
Obtain the hard to find instrument: Bootable DOS CD (if such thing exists)
After booting DOS type: format c:
Hit Enter.
