Probably not at the moment as I'm home alone, but if I said it in public most folks wouldn't bat an eyelid - they are used to me and my strange ways. Heck I've even got an e-reader and most people consider that a bit odd.

I used to get strange looks when I would be out in public reading my sony. That could have been the skirt and clown makeup though.

What I hate are all the Welcome to... posts. You sign in to avoid advertising and then are inundated with these spam like duplicate messages which are either a sign of someone with way to much time on their hands, or some sort of automated posting thing. Gets old real fast.

I suppose it depends on the recipient. When I first came here I was quite pleased to see so many people greeting me - in fact we had to stop replying on that thread because it got to about 95 posts which ended up a bit silly for an 'introduction' thread.
I do know what you're referring to, if you watch the live-feed you can see a string of 10~15 posts all at once by the one person on the intro thread; however, quite a lot of those are specifically composed to the OP (ie, the poster actually does read the first post) and it gives the new person a change to engage with and get to know the more active participants of the forum. What would be worse... the situation now, or the situation where a new person introduces themselves and gets no replies for days? Personally I prefer to see new people engage in discussions ASAP. There are now a few websites for ebooks that have a writer's section that is similar to The Lounge. I think of those forums as the equivalent of spending time in a big house with a bunch of other crazy writers and artists. It's where the rough and tumble of the clash of ideas occurs and is just as important as the technical forums. Save 'The Lounge' karma!

I would suggest you stay away from the 'introduce myself' thread. Its not about too much time on my hands......its about making a concerted effort to welcome newbies, and try to make this site more comfortable for them. You may know all there is to know about it, but many do not. Ebook readers are still very new to many, and help is always appreciated. |
