Just finished "The Tree of Life" available here....from our own DrPDL's wife, Elita Faith Daniels. What struck me the strongest was her wonderful way with words.......she has a flowing, attention grabbing style. Her characters and surroundings came alive, and made me care about them. Fantasy, elves, magic, learning to deal with your own demons, all play a part, and even if you think you might not enjoy such a genre, I would be willing to bet the writing style alone will draw you in and keep you interested. While it tends to lean a little towards the dark side at times, Elita always manages to lift the spirits at just the right time.....and give hope. Well worth the read. The Amazon Kindle edition was formatted nicely, with working TOC's. Here is her site: http://elitadaniels.com/ Last edited by desertgrandma; 09-27-2010 at 11:02 AM. Reason: addendum |

I re-read "Ender's Game" recently, and it stood up well to a second reading. I then went on through the series, but they suffer from significantly diminishing returns, and I gave up after two more books. (Hardly a surprise - "Game" is a bloody hard act to follow.) The deal-killer for me has been reading some of Card's public comments of late - I find his attitudes extremely unpleasant, and I can't put them out of my mind long enough now to let his books speak. I think it's probably better sometimes to know nothing about an author's persona. | |

Now onto some classic SF: The Green Hills of Earth and The Menace from Earth by Robert Heinlein. This is an omnibus edition of two books of short stories. Fun stuff, I seem to remember, and I think I'll enjoy the re-read. (In particular, "The Green Hills of Earth" contains the eponymous short story, which is excellent.") I just finished "Mini Shopaholic" by Sophie Kinsella. First half of the book I was irritated with Becky, then she redeemed herself, but then at the very end Kinsella just disappointed me. I think she should drop this series and keep working on her standalones, which are always enjoyable. The character Becky basically has been in the same loop for the entire series, and it's getting old.

Reading *a lot* of non-fiction lately. Finished "A Voyage Long and Strange" by Tony Horwitz this afternoon - earlier I read his "Confederates in the Attic". It's a look at what happened in the United States between Christopher Columbus and Plymouth Rock. An interesting look at how much of the United States was visited and explored between these two events. Some I knew. Some I didn't. Not much you will find in your typical High School History text books. I started to read another history non-fiction "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen when I heard an interview on National Public Radio with the author of "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", Rebecca Skloot. I found the story interesting enough that I fired up the Kindle and downloaded the book. So far very interesting. |
