I have now, and I've never come across the term used in that way before. Perhaps it's an American usage?

If I had a copy of the Koran on my reader, I would delete it. Why would I do that? I would do that because I'd never read it. It has nothing to do with any other reason then someone else would have had to have put it on and because I do not plan on reading it, no reason for it to be there.

There are a few individuals who like to pollute the discussion with racist remarks that are completely unacceptable with our guidelines. We're looking into this.
In the meantime we've closed the thread. I will keep you updated. Last edited by Alexander Turcic; 09-25-2010 at 06:47 PM. |

Thread reopened.
Please be advised that we do not tolerate any form of racist remarks and ignoring it will most certainly lead to a permanent ban. ![]() |

So, I guess the question comes down to this; when an object has some special meaning for one group people because of their beliefs, and as a result of which that group of people treat the object in a special way, is there any requirement on people who do not share those beliefs to treat the object in the same way?

Personally I feel that it is not showing respect to respect crazy beliefs that people have. You show respect by telling them what you think about it and by not adapting your behaviour. |

Yes, but how far do you have to go to show respect toward a belief you don't share? And how do you choose which beliefs you should respect openly and which you can ignore? Naturally, many of the beliefs we may inadvertently hurt are unknown to us. So the beliefs that we will "choose" to respect will inevitably be the ones that belong to people who are close to us... or who are especially vocal in voicing them, and even occasionally threatening.
Everybody knows that cows are sacred in India, and yet we kill cows every day. Where is our respect for the Hindu religion? (Em, I do hope it's the Hindu religion that hold cows are sacred, if not, my apologies to all concerned ![]() |

When in India, respect their cows .... what we do in 'our world' matters not.
If someone holds a belief that is not one's own, then accept and ignore it; why feel the need to change them? (unless it's an issue detrimental to health (for example). |

Also, if people believe things that destroys their life you can argue that society should interfere. One example are cults. |
