That used to be the case when we first moved up here - most of the guys at work would rather have Hogmanay off.

Gradually, though, the trend favoured Christmas more and more; irrespective of them having kids etc - and it looks as though that trend, in this area, seems more accepted in the wider society.

This is my cue to say "when I was young..." Pfft!

Anyway, they used to wait until after Thanksgiving (late November for non-Yanks) to put up all the Christmas stuff, but we're starting to see it now. But people will put off the lights until after Halloween, because they need to put up Halloween lights! (They're mostly orange with some other colors, e.g. purple and green, in case you were wondering.)

My memory is that Christmas was a quiet(er) family affair, whereas hogmanay was more of a general community celebration (and hence the need for the extra day's holiday to "recover").
