My friend, don't be so quick to criticize GiddieupHorsie. She's brand new here, and may very well be unacquainted with the way terrazoids, before his suspension, made a persistent habit of routinely offending and belittling all people, religions, and cultures who didn't agree with him. Were she aware of how truly antagonistic he was to members of our world-wide community in his short time here, I doubt she would have been so quick to defend him. She apparently sees only a Christian defending his faith, and there's certainly nothing wrong with people defending their beliefs. I doubt she's aware of every offensive thing he posted in that other thread that was ultimately closed on his account.

Not criticising anyone else's opinion of terrazoids; but he didn't seem to me insufferably offensive.
I thought he had his tongue in his cheek a lot of the time.
I've seen what I consider more abrasive posters tolerated here.

(just my opinion )

WT, I'd say ardeegee suspects that GiddieUpHorsie is a sock puppet of terrazoids.

Yes, that is what I thought with the first post defending him-- then I looked at the other few posts and the correlation didn't look too obvious. But then with the second pro-freakazoid post at the same time as the three other probable sockpuppets, it made me wonder even more. And given that GUH is now showing as "suspended", it looks like mods found firm evidence of that. (Ooops, I see "suspended" is now "banned.")

He may be right. I see GiddieUpHorsie has been banned.

I could be wrong; but it appears that perhaps a certain banned member who claimed the high moral ground has been involved is more than their share of gross deception.

I've never heard the term sockpuppet. Is that a general Internetism like "troll" or is it mobileread-specific?

I am glad the thread wasn't closed. I actually had just started reading that other thread, which was pretty interesting until disaster struck. Glad the same fate didn't occur here!

Thanks for your clarification. I won't add any more either, except a clarification of my own.

I had only intended to refer to Dan Brown's demonstrably false ideas that dismissed the Christian doctrine wholly as a Catholic deception. And to me it became "conspiracy theory" when I saw those ideas being assimilated into popular culture as though they were truth, even though they were not just false, but easily proven as such with even the most cursory of research.

Scholarship like that of Ehrman, Metzger, Oxford Dictionaries, etc., are certainly not in such a category. (The Jesus Seminar... well... that's... um... ugh!)

It's a general Internet term. Wiki has a decent rundown:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sockpuppet_(Internet)

but basically it's when a person sets up a second identity (or more) in any kind of forum for the specific purpose of praising the original, trolling, slagging off someone in the hope that only the sockpuppet gets banned, and so on.

Discovered sockpuppetry is very likely to light up the entire control panel(*) back in the moderator Star Chamber.

Cheers,
Marc
(* We have an actual Control Panel, but I just mean the metaphorical version here, which in my mind looks kind of Bridge-of-the-Enteprise-y. )

Oddly enough, the first part of this description was making me envision the panel of moderators as that group of brains in jars with the flashing lights when they talked from that episode of ST:TOS even before you said "Enterprise."

Working unseen behind the scenes of the forum, debating amongst themselves-- in units of quatloos-- how likely someone is to be a sockpuppet...

Ha. Just substitute the "brains" for little kittens wanting to haz cheeseburgers, and puppeez wif hotdogz, and its exactly right.

And with that pleasant thought, I shall step aside again, and allow you to continue uninterrupted your polite discussion.

Marc, I have been a member of MR for over two years, and didn't want to have to ask 'Why on earth is everyone is everyone talking about 'psockpuppets'?'

While I'm on the 'phone love, where is our 'how to' list? You know 'spoilers and the whole arsenal of goodies to zap your post with'?

New computer, new programs and don't know what the heck I'm doing
anymore. Those sort of instructions.

Glad we cleared that up.

Yes, Dan Brown is a piece of work. Had his Da Vinci Code been presented simply as a work of fiction, there would have been no reason to raise an alarm. It was in presenting his ideas as well-researched historical conclusions that he tripped off into La La Land.
