Oh, I think typing works too. I don't have any research showing that writing by hand works better than typing, once one has learned the letters. (I still practice writing Chinese by hand, because I remember the characters more easily that way.)

There's some research showing the value to the student of making flashcards. I'll see if I can dig it up.
I wonder if this means that the idea (on the ipdf discussion thread) of having a tool to select a bit of text that can be saved in a bib or manifest file would be a bad idea. It might make extracting bits of text easier, but could then mean that I won't remember the paper so well. Certainly when I'm researching something a little new to me I find I have to write a precis of each paper until I get enough of the topic sorted out in my head.

I think being able to extract the bits of text would still be a good idea, though some might want to take manual notes instead.

I agree - I actually do a combination when I read academic papers - circling or highlighting sections of the text and then scribbling in the margins. I'd love to be able to use the pen to highlight and copy text to the manifest. As long as it included the page number, I could then use it to go back through the pdf and look at my scribbled notes.

Yes, that would be great! Especially if there were also a way to quickly fast-forward to pages you'd made notes on.

Yep. There's an eraser. You can also adjust the colour and line thickness of the pen.
