My black 650 (pre-ordered) arrived today! It is just as nice as everyone says. Slim and pretty with fast page turns and a beautiful screen. Definitely glad I went with the 650. I think I would have found a 5 inch screen too small.

I have just received my red 650. So far I can feel that it's much faster than my old 505. I often use my readers for reading scientific PDFs and PDF versions of scientific books. I will post my impressions about it soon.

Thanks for the welcome, rebarnmom!

I've had some time to play with my 650. I've noticed something interesting. If you move through multiple pages (by swiping and holding), the reader moves quickly from page to page without that black "flash". I had always assumed the flash was intrinsic to how the e-ink refreshes. This suggests otherwise. Does anyone know why the flash is there? It doesn't really bother me (I quickly stopped noticing it when reading my mom's kindle), but I've seen so many people react negatively to it the first time they pick up an e-reader, that there must be a good reason that it's there.

Welcome! To answer your question, the flash refreshes the E-Ink screen. You can page forward in fast mode, but if you look closely, you'll see "ghosting" - traces of the words not disappearing, sort of building up.

Some readers have the option of turning off the flash, but then ghosting builds up and the display looks murky until the flash is turned back on.

Woohoo !

sonystore-europe just proceded my order. My credit card has been debited.
That means that the device should be ready to mail. I hope I will receive it at the beginning of the next week.
Edit: it has been shipped !
Ordered 2010-09-18.

The PRS-650 (red) information page still says "shipped due beggining of october"

Do you guys believe that the PRS-650 will drop price after a month or two in the market ?
Was it the case with the PRS600 ?

There are two things to consider when comparing the PRS-600 to the PRS-650. The first is that the Sony's main competitors (The Nook and Kindle) are now far cheaper than the Sony. The second is that by and large the PRS-650 at first blush appears to have all the virtues and none of the vices of the 600. For people who want a touch screen E-Ink reader, it and the 350 seem to be the first truly satisfactory solutions (In the sense that they don't force you to make any compromises in reading quality).

I hate not having a cover for my 650, it seems so naked without one. Why can't they include a cover as they did with the 505? The Sony's carry a premium price after all.

M-Edge covers and jackets

I wrote to M-Edge and ask if they will be selling products for the 350 and 650 and got this reply.

Good morning Louis,

Thank you for your interest in our products! In the future we may have a product line for the newer Sony e-reader devices available, but nothing currently. We are listening when we receive requests such as yours. Please let us know if you have additional questions or concerns. Thank you!

Take Care,

I've never heard of a Sony price drop until clearance time. Still no 650s in South Florida. I asked for it by model number in Boca today and the guy thought it was the new Blu Ray player. Called over to Palm Beach Gardens, they have five red and five black enroute from the warehouse.
