I don't have an Ipod wall charger, but I do have a generic USB wall charger. Which works perfectly on the Sony650.

I know that this one from The Source by CC (aka RadioShack) in Canada does NOT work with my wife's PRS-650...

http://www.thesource.ca/estore/produ...roduct=1419902

I get a largely blank screen, that does say "USB connected", but no indication that it's charging.

So, basically, this is the same issue the PRS600 had, except the 600 also had a PSP-compatible power jack, so you could work around it.

That's a shame.

No it isn't. From all reports to date, and from my own experience, the majority of standard USB chargers with a micro USB tip will work fine with the new readers. It appears that some chargers are not wired according to spec, like the one mentioned in the previous post, and do not work properly. That's hardly Sony's fault.

It is my understanding that there are two protocols for charging the reader (and other USB devices) -- one for when it is connected to a computer with the data lines active and the other when it is connected to charger with no data connection. If the charger is wired improperly to use the computer connected protocol, it will not work with the reader (or many other USB devices).

This USB Power Supply (order code N03GJ) from Maplin UK also does not work to charge a PRS-650, even when using the USB cable supplied with the reader.

Hoss, I've been a computer engineer for 25 years now. There is no "charging protocol" in USB - at least there is no need for one. Any "protocol" layered on top of simply providing the power levels specified in the USB standards is, by definition, a proprietary hack to keep 3rd party devices from working correctly.

For example, check out this picture. One pin provides +5v, another provides Ground. Current is limited by the spec to 500ma (although it is common for computers to provide more than 500ma for devices that draw a lot of power, like HDs). There is no need for the data pins to get involved when transferring power.

OMG!

I think I am going to start a topic where you can tell us what works and what doesn't work with 350/650.

This looks very similar to the Maplin UK USB Power Supply (order code N03GJ) that does not work either. Aren't RS and Maplin related?

Symptoms are the same: "USB connected" but no charging indication.

- I wonder if the Sony is trying to draw more than the standard 500ma current provided by the USB spec. That would mean it couldn't charge unless it was connected to a device that provides more than the required 500ma.
