I think apple has done a really good job with the app store. The proof of the pudding is in the eating and several hundred thousand apps show there's nothing big brotherish about it. Apple doesn't want you to do porn, extreme violence, apps that someway breach the law and apps that handle tasks that only the os is responsible for. This makes for a very secure platform. How many viruses have proliferated on the idevices? How much personal information has been stolen? Zero. There do appear to be bugs as in all devices but they are adressed quickly with this system.

As for ms one can hardly call them pioneers in unobtrusive control of their softare. For example apple sell iwork without any restrictions and take your word for it and where you install it. That's a classy approach imho. But apple is also a hardware manufacturer so I don't expect or demand software developers to follow it.

As for itunes you can share ALL your songs on the network with up to five computers and apple were the ones who managed to push record execs to finally let go of drm with a very ingenious and simple reasoning: they already can rip music from cds without drm. Ms on the other hand riddled wmvs with drm in an unrelenting way, and there was a huge mess with all the "plays for sure" devices. They were slow to learn and lost on that front too.

I do agree though that book drm is very, very tricky indeed.

This really doesn't belong on a post about the new Sony Readers.

Every year there is a Pwn2Own hacking contest. The Apple products are always the first devices breached.

The app store approval process is hidden and arbitrary. They'll disapprove of an app one week, approve it the next and then disapprove all over again. If it isn't "big brother" I don't know what is.

As for me, I won't buy an Apple product.

If Notion Ink ever releases the Adam, I will buy that, but I will use my new Sony for reading novels.

Back to the topic at hand. I've already pre-ordered a Sony PRS-650. They said it was shipping yesterday, but I suspect, as many others have already guessed, that it won't ship until at least September 16th. Must be some glitch with the website.

Just to be fair, in two of the three years, the winner had already determined the exploit on the Mac prior to the contest. With the other platforms, the contestants came up with the exploits on the spot.

Nice! I'd be sitting by the door tapping my foot in anticipation! Unfortunately, I cannot justify the 650 since I just received a 600 as a replacement for a blown repair on my 500. And I live in an area where there aren't any tall buildings...

The harder wait for me is going to be in between when I actually receive my 650 and when Calibre updates to support it!

It will probably be pretty fast if not already in place. In the mean time you can always do the direct copy....almost as easy.

Don't let that stop you.

I don't use Callibre extensively, but the Readers (PRS-505 and newer) will mount as discs on your Computer. You can use Mac OS X Finder or Windows Explorer to copy ePUBs/LRFs directly to the correct location, and you're done. It's not that user friendly, but it works.

On the Reader, you drop the file(s) in "/database/media/books/" unmount and you're ready to go.

Actually, I haven't tested this. Better order me a PRS-605, and I will make sure it works for you!

Hmm, neither are there where I live... Though, I'd be heartbroken if I'd have to demolish my BBMini before I could get the Sony!

(I don't even like Sony! But I'd love to buy that 650...)

You can't argue will these guys, they 'll drive you mad, but thanks for taking this up for me, on this much mentioned misinformed point about said contest. There's one platform anti malware, anti spyware, anti virus and another with none and close to zero problems but somehow the first platform is more secure. Let alone that I was referring to apple's mobile os (for the app store), and not the macs...whatever.

I had ordered the PRS-600, the lighted book cover and the ac-adapter. They shipped the AC-Adapter today. Yeah, I really needed that first.

Hi all,

I'm currently in San Francisco and I was planning to have a look at these new Sony e-readers however I discovered that the downtown Sony Style is permanently closed. So, where else (in what shops) I can see these new gems? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Unfortunately, neither the Best Buy stores nor the Target stores here seem to know when that will be and we have no Sony Style stores. The pictures here at MR look great and the comments about the screens sound great, but nothing beats seeing it for yourself.

I'm really anxious to get out on the beach and plunk myself down next to one of those iPad people ala the Kindle commercial!

You could order from a site with a 30 day MBG if you are desperate!

My Target does not have these yet either. And they actually had one NIB PRS-300 for $75.00. So if you don't need the latest, that's a super deal.
