Great work NiLuJe. I have a question, though. Is there a chance the old autoreboot bug from the font hack, where it would reboot twice, is present in the K3 screensaver hack? I just dropped a 'reboot' file into the linkss folder and it really looks like it went through a second boot when the first was done.

@flandroid: Err, no, it shouldn't happen. Can you take a look at your logs (;dumpMessages)? (search from 'framework').

Do you mean the the framework restarted, and then once again after it was fully loaded? In which case that would be news to me, the only multiple-reboot bug I was aware of (and tried to fix a few versions ago) was multiple framework reboots at the same time, which would cause the progress bar to reset very early, or at worse to shutdown after 5 failed attempts.

I'll try to remember to check the logs when I get home; my Kindle isn't with me at the moment. I'll try just doing another restart first, and watching it closely, in case it was a one-time thing (or I just had a brain burp ).

What it did was restart, do the longish tree-screen progress bar load, and then when it was done, screen flash and redid the same one again, with the same progress bar speed.

@flandroid: Yep, that would be new, in which case I'd very much like to take a look at the logs .

I'll PM them to you (if the double-restart happens again) when I get home.

I've generated logs before, but only looked at them on-device -- what format do they save to, straight text? Just curious, I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Even if the double restart doesn't happen again, that's worth taking a look at the logs I think .

And, yep, it's plaintext, like usual *nix syslogs.

I just tried a reboot via the watchog, and nothing weird happened, but the fact that a double restart could happen is not that unusual .

EDIT: Thanks for the logs. Turns out you got the 3.0.2 update OTA something like 1 minute & a half after the framework restart. And it does make the Kindle do a full restart, so I guess that's what happened .

Hey I recently installed the 0.3N jailbreak for my kindle 3G US. I also installed the screensaver hack. Then I started seeing these broken characters quite often as I read. Any idea of how to fix it?

Lightbulb Compiling SMB for kindle3

Could somebody smarter then me combile SMB/CIFS or AFP (Bonjour anyone?) for the kindle3 so we can finally sync over WIFI?

DID some research into it and it should be possible:

GENERAL on compiling for ARM
compiling for the ARM architecture:
http://hackaday.com/2010/09/17/build...architectures/

SPECIFIC for the kindle:
http://www.yifanlu.com/2010/07/26/co...amazon-kindle/

(I know its the kernel, but should be possible to adapt to only compile SMB and dependencies....)...

I absolutely HATE that i need to tether my k3 over USB!, this would solve it.

Then its just a few twists and turns to do a curl/rsync? to a hosted folder (DROPBOX anyone????)

Lightbulb Bonjour on Kindle3

This thread:
http://old.nabble.com/Crosscompiling...d15354374.html

Should get you started on compiling a slim Avahi for the k3
(Avahi is an opensource alternative to mDNSResponder) <= bonjour

With that on it you could potentially call mykindle.local from local network to access it.

and this one patches the apple version to arm:

alternatively (the easy way out) could be to use the RSYNC compiled binary in the USBNETWORKING hack (in bin).

If we could somehow run this when a wifi connection is detected - mabe we could rsync down a directory and keep a synced libray online somewhere?

This should be pretty easy todo...!!!!

@bonaina: Er, I seriously doubt the hack are the cause of your issue . Check the source of your book to make sure.

@drendo70: I absolutely loathe Samba. And Bonjour is a close second, whatever the implementation. But you're welcome to try ;D. I'll probably at least try sshfs though, or even NFS just for kicks. There's a bunch of different tools available to build x-compile TC (crossdev on Gentoo, crosstool-ng, ...), and even a few ready-to-use x-compile TC packages. [FYI: For the K3, armv6j arch (32b le), arm1136jf-s cpu, vfp fpu].

I had weird stuff like that happen on the weekend, before I did the hack. Plus missing words - in every book I checked. Did a hard restart and it was all fixed. I had just put the K3 in a lighted cover for the first time and wondered if that had anything to do with it. The hack isnt the issue this time.

Thanks alot for the replies.

@Nijule The source of the book is Amazon and it maybe their mistake. I'll try redownloading it.

@pushka when you mean hard restart, do you mean just restarting it through settings? or did you reset it to factory default?

Couple of questions, Does the jailbreak or any of the hacks get overwritten when upgrading to a newer firmware ?
Also where are you guys getting your new screen saver pics from ?
Thanks =)

The hacks and firmware are not affected by firmware upgrades (at least, not yet!) and you can see the link in my sig for over a thousand screensaver images.
