SonyStyle in Palm Beach Gardens has seven silver pockets in stock. They have to get the 650 from the warehouse. Still unknown about accessories, I'm going to take a drive up there and see.

This is my first post on this forum although I have been a visitor for a long while.

My question is does anybody know if the Waterstones price of £129.99p for a PRS-350 will be available after today, i.e. after the product is launched and no longer on preorder? I am trying to decide between the silver and pink but would like to see them in the flesh before making a decision. I've spent ages on the phone ringing round all local Sony Stores and Waterstones but nobody has them on display yet.

I just called this store and was on hold for some time while they went to double check. They said they have 350 available for purchase today, and they have no idea when the shipment of 650s will arrive. I am impatient, but I am also pretty sure I want a 650, so I asked about return policy and was told it was 14 days and a 15% restocking fee.

FWIW my local Best Buy says they have received no notice whatsoever about when they will begin stocking any of the new Sonys.

I bought mine in the Cardiff Sony Centre, they had them on the shelf and priced-up when I arrived at 12pm. Anyway, it's now passed closing so it'll be 'legal' for anyone to buy one first thing tomorrow.

It seems sonystyle.com is clueless as well. I pre-ordered my 650 back on 9/3 and their site gave a ship date of 9/7. When that came and went I called their customer service as was told by a rep "our web site doesn't work too well, that date is a mistake" although in the same breath she encouraged me to "keep checking the site" (??). Anyhow, they said the correct ship date was 9/16 and have repeated that any time I have checked this week. Now on the 16th they are saying there are no 650s in their warehouse and the 9/16 date is the date they are due to arrive in the warehouse (but no sign of them yet) and that they won't actually start shipping until "sometime next week...you will get an email." Fudge.

Hi All, Just registered, seems like South Wales, U.K Sony Centres have had them delivered today. Cardiff centre had 3 650 and 3 350 delivered and on display. I picked up a Black 650 leaving just one left for sale. It looks stunning just about to download some books to it. Cheers.

My Waterstone's is rubbish in regard Sony Readers.
They placed it in a very bad location with very weak/bad lighting. It is permanently fastened to the stand, so you cannot take it in your hand to get a feel. I am sure it was done deliberately, so to discourage people to buy it. I asked them long time ago why not to increase lighting and also connect them to the stand with something flexible. They said no way. It is insecure and they are not going to change it. Period.
Last Friday PRS-600 was still £200 and PRS-300 £140 or £170? Only since Monday they reduced price 300 - £100 and 600 - £160 or £170.

I am really tempted to contact Sony and file a complaint. I am just too lazy to bother.

My guess is that Sony got so many orders for the PRS-650 that they've been unable to ship to stores and now the stock they had is now on back order.

If that's true, then why have we not heard of a single person in the US receiving one, or even having one shipped? Even outside the US, there have only been a couple of posters in Australia to have obtained a 650. Its pure speculation, but I am starting to wonder if something went seriously wrong on the 650 production line. After all, dozens of people have been posting about their 350s for about a week now, all around the world. I would somewhat prefer the 650, but if Sony does not start giving some kind of clear indication of when they will be available, I may just opt to get the cheaper 350 instead.

I am not sure about it at all.
Kindle 6"+Wi-Fi costs mere £110 and it sits on the Amazon front page for a month.
Sony....nobody knows about it except geeks and the price is over the top: 650 6" £200, 350 5" £130, even Kindle 6"+Wi-Fi+3G £150.

Sony is at a big disadvantage. I don't know how they are planning to win general public.

But as we have read, the K3's Mobipocket is not all that wonderful. It doesn't even have respect for the format. A book can act different in KindleForPC and the K3. So that's not good. pdurrant has been documenting a lot of the gotchas Amazon has in the Kindle's Mobipocket.

Sony may be more expensive, but the the ADE is less flaky in terms of the Desktop ADE.

Jon, I am not arguing these points. However, the public is unaware of these issues. Sony doesn't do anything in order to educate/make aware of its fantastic reader an average Joe. They don't get their idea across.

Jon have you ever owned or at least read a whole book on a Kindle? Going by what others say is not a good idea AFAIC. You need to experience a Kindle or whatever reader first hand. I've got both Kindles and Sonys. I definitely agree that ePub is a much better format than MOBI, much more robust, etc. But does that matter when reading books that are mostly just text, like a novel. No, not in my experience. I really cannot see any difference that is apparent. Sure ePubs do better at displaying images and certainly have much greater CSS support, but for the typical books most people read on readers I think this makes little or no difference.

Amazon has done an excellent job of marketing, while Sony acts like they are embarrassed to admit they make readers. Amazon has created a good bookstore, while Sony continues to piddle on itself. Amazon makes frequent firmware updates to their Kindles, while Sony rarely does. About the only place where Sony outperforms Amazon is the quality build of their readers. But I have to say that as much as I love my 350, for a lot less money I bought a Kindle WiFi that is well built and has much more functionality. And Sony has yet to address the large screen reader requests. The 900 and 950 or not an answer to large screens.

I think for the average reader the Kindle is in their face and sexy, while the Sony Readers are hidden on a backshelf someplace collecting dust. And that is Sony's fault.

I just called Sony to check the status of my 650 order, and the CS rep said the warehouse shows them still backordered/delayed. I cancelled the order; I guess I'll wait until they're actually available in stores and save the cost of expedited shipping.
