It's pretty much women for mystery/crime (probably 60/40) and men for SF for me as well (probably closer to 90/10).

But that mostly because most of the SF I read these days is older (and you only have a few woman authors - Andre Norton, CL Moore, Anne McCathy). But about the only modern SF series I like is by a woman - the Retrieval Artist series by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

Since Tattncat was so approximately accurate as to put percentage on it, I couldn't resist and counted authors in my Goodreads list. I think it covers about 80% of the fiction I've read. As for non-fiction, its probably mostly men, as my interests and hobbies skews toward traditionally male or gender-neutral interests.

Result: 152 women and 114 men ~ 57% - 43%
So my guess wasn't that bad after all.

That's quite a difference. And yes, tell us who the women authors are.

I wish I knew the male/female ratio in the books I read (as opposed to authors, which the librarything stats are counting). Maybe I'll try to make a counting in my Calibre library, which is only a small portion of what I have read, but could be an indication.

Minette Walters is the only one I read, though I have Mo Hayder on one of my wishlists somewhere I think. I liked Walters's books, but the last one I meant felt a bit Harlequin-ish with the brave manly detective protecting the poor defenseless heroin, so I haven't tried any in a while.

Not the same as mine. I haven't added her books to my librarything, but I'm pretty sure I read The Ice House and The Scold's Bridle, and probably also The Dark Room, which may have been the one that I didn't like as much.

I think mine would skew more heavily towards women authors - if only because I've read all of Agatha Christie It's some years since I've last read crime fiction and mystery, but I generally preferred female authors and they do tend to produce a lot of books.

That's also my gut feeling, I think I tend to read more books by author when the author is female, but I'd like to check the facts
