If it does the slowdown again, then it's not a formatting problem. I'm thinking like jswinden here ; sounds like a processor issue, which would explain why, when the problem happens, leaving it be for 5 mins seems to alleviate the slowdowns for another 20-30 mins...
Have you tried turning the Reader off and back on again to see if that fixes the problem?

Yes, it doesn't. Leaving it be for about 5 mins fixes it for about 20-30 mins. I haven't tried rebooting it, tho I did reboot it a bunch of times (even wiped it clean ; format) and the problem is still there.

I encountered the problem again and just sent the ePub to finish reading my book, will see how things turn out from now on!

Could very well be a formatting issue, or a problem with it trying to index ahead of you? Don't the new readers have built in dictionaries and stuff, which theoretically may slow things down as it tries to much all the words on the page and load the dictionary.....Hrm.

I've had some slowdown and coloring issues with my nook and K2 when out in direct sunlight in a Florida summer. So, whether that's a humidity or a heat issue..the world will never know

As far I can tell from the published sources, the hardware in all three models is about the same as in PRS900, with upgraded E-Ink controller, touch screen and flash size. Naturally, PRS-650 is missing the wireless circuitry of the 950 and 350 doesn't have audio out and card slots.

Okay, here are my findings...

So after having the same problem tonight, reading the same eBook (The Dakota Cipher by William Dietrich, converted from ePub to LRF with Calibre), I loaded the ePub version and finished the book w/o a hitch.

I then loaded next the ePub version of Steve Berry's new short story "The Balkan Escape", which I was able to read flawlessly. Curious, I hooked up the PRS-350 to the laptop, removed the ePub version of the aforementioned eBook, loaded the LRF and read it again.... w/o a problem.

Next I loaded "Pulse" by Jeremy Robinson, the LRF version, and just flipped up to page 120, not reading, just turning pages as soon as they were loaded ; again no problem.

Afterwards I hooked the PRS-350 to the laptop again, removed the ePub version of The Dakota Cipher, loaded the LRF version, and again just flipped thru the pages quickly. Come page 120, there ya go, slowness began. I switched to another LRF book but the slowness was still there.

I waited 5 mins for the slowness to clear up, went to the library to load "Pulse" once more and flipped again about 100 pages, and sure enough, slowness started again.

At that point, it really does look like that something "bad" has happened to the LRF version of The Dakota Cipher that seems to slow down the device.

I can't be 100% sure. Hopefully tho it's not a sign that since Calibre's maker abandoned the LRF format that some ePubs will have issues being converted (I actually found one, Sleepless by Charlie Huston, that wouldn't convert from ePub to LRF at all on the latest Calibre - but still did so on an old laptop with an old version of Calibre).

Guess I'll eventually have to follow the ePub flow - I would really rather stay with LRF tho as I find the font used more readable than the ePub (darker, slightly bolder I would say).

I'm not attempting to raise any sort of alarm here for a potential problem - but I'd rather report everything I find even if it might just turn out to be a local problem.

However, I can't wait for Calibre to support the PRS-350 directly ; using the Sony Software has always been a major PITA here (hang ups while transferring, etc) and I've had my PRS-300 crash, when reading, WAY less when using Calibre to transfer eBooks than when using the Sony Software, plus it's a lot faster to transfer files too.

Anyway, as more people on this board gets the device, maybe we'll learn more

If it is just the font issue, then you can easily switch to ePub. Simply find out what font you like (personally, I chose the bold caecilia), put it in a folder called fonts and stick that folder onto your ereader main memory section. Then go into the extra CSS section of calibre and stick a font call to that font in the folder. Voila, you have a nicer font in your books.

Calibre recognized my 350 when I got it today. I was able to transfer books with it. I was happy--means I didn't have to bother installing the Sony software at all.

(But on topic, it wasn't sunny enough out this afternoon to test for slow page turns.)

Wow, that's nice... Calibre here (v 0.7.18) doesn't see the PRS-350 at all Under Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks very much dwanthny for this info! I'm getting a 350 and it should be here this week. My only concern was how fast Calibre would support it, though in the past it has been very quickly. I really hate using the Sony software, so thanks again...

Hi hgwlackey, that's great that Calibre worked for you out of the box! BTW what kind of computer/operating system do you have?

Thanks!

Hi Squirsier, I have the same system/configuration as you. Perhaps you can send the guys at Calibre the info following dwanthny link above to speed up the creation of a 350 device driver. It seems real easy and straight forward. If I had my 350 I'd do it myself... hopefully it will be here some time this week. Thanks in advance for your efforts!
