Is this possible?

Hi.

I finally managed to persuade my parents to cancel all the newspaper subscriptions, to make way for the Kindle 3 I plan to order in a few days.

I'll setup different feeds for both of my parent and myself to be fetched on a daily basis. Now I was wondering if it is possible to use Calibre to generate a "newspaper-like" display of news. At least in a way there are more then one article displayed continuously on one page from one rss feed. I hope this makes sense. I'm looking for something that not just downloads rss feed links of the articles, generates a page with only links a user would have to choose to read each article separatly, but something that fetches the links and its content AND displays them all, i.e. news from previous day, on one page, article after and article. Is this possible with Calibre and the python within or not? Would there be another solution for my problem?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Regards,
B. Kos

I'm not sure what you're looking for. Go download a couple of newspapers and use the calibre viewer to see for yourself how they are formatted.

Try the Greensboro News and Record for an example of a typical news feed via calibre.

It sounds sort of like he wants to not only get the articles in the RSS feed, he also wants to follow the links on the article page. If that's it, the answer is that links on the article page can be followed. However, most built-in recipes don't follow them. The reason is that they often go to a different site and have a drastically different format from the article page itself, so it's difficult to make them appear cleanly, without advertising and navigation links.

Some limited links are followed in recipes where the link goes to the same site, etc. as the format of the page at that link is known.

We'll only know once the poster responds, but I'm betting he is looking for exactly what most of the newspaper recipes provide.

And even if he's not, perhaps Google Reader will do what he wants.

Guess i was unclear in my original post.

@dwanthny

I already tried a couple of feeds that come with Calibre. They all generate some sort of "Headline" link and in some cases a short summary of the article, like the Greensboro News you suggested.

I am looking more in the lines of something like the layout of an online newspaper, for example take a look at the front page of http://www.nytimes.com/. I don't need the specific layout, I would just like to make downloaded rss content more visually appealing. The process i was thinking about was as follows:
1) in Calibre i would choose an rss feed
2) the Calibre would go online and fetch the selected headlines and its content, using a specific recipe and a page-layout "template"
3) it would generate a page layout as the one from NYT, with the collected headlines and content.

As said, i don't need it to be as complicated as that, just want to get a more visual overview of the content, so the end user, my folks, would get a similar experience as with the news paper. I imagine this would be possible, i guess i'm just asking if it's possible with calibre.

What do you think, my wishes ahead of the time or is this doable? If so, how?

Regards,
B. Kos
