I think it's cultural. I once encountered an Indian peeing in the street in NYC. His technique was to drop his pants, bend over, and put his hand between his legs to aim the stream behind him, with what looked like bowing as part of the process.

I have no idea where he acquired the habit, and it's not the sort of question one asks, but it was a unique approach.

Nope. More like about 30 seconds of raised eyebrows and a muttered "That's different..." comment, with a vague curiosity of what might ensue if an NYC police car happened by. (I believe there are city ordinances about such things.)
