The "viewing angle" of an LCD screen is exactly what it sounds like - how far away from "directly head on" that the screen is still readable. IPS is a particular type of LCD screen that has a very wide (almost 180 degree) viewing angle.

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch, and I've read a number of books on it using Stanza and the Kindle application. My understanding is that the current version has a comparable screen size with much better resolution, so it should only be improved.
Stanza in particular has lots of customizing options in terms of font size and text and background color. I find that for text only, and particularly for "light" reading, the iPod works great. For books that require more concentration, I find my concentration broken by the need to frequently swipe to the next page much more often then I'd have to turn a physical page or change screens on a larger device. I have one book that I tried on the iPod, but stopped and am saving it for when I have an iPad. But for casual, pleasure reading, I find the iPod Touch perfectly functional. While a bigger screen might be nice, then it wouldn't fit in my pocket, so I'd have it on hand in fewer situations. Once upon a time I always traveled with a book. I had gotten out of that habit for a while as I tried to pare down the number of items I was taking with me everywhere, but now I can travel with 50 books on me at all times with less bulk then the one book I used to carry. I like it just fine. |

I find viewing angle to only be an issue if you're trying to share your device with someone else, like if two of you were watching a video. Unless you habitually have someone reading over your shoulder (and you want to encourage that to continue), or unless you plan on using some kind of stand to hold your iPod/iPhone for you, I don't think viewing angle is a big issue when considering the eReader functionality. It's never been an issue when reading on my iPod Touch, and its screen is several generations behind the current version.

I just got a 4G Touch and own a 2G as well. The 4G has a much sharper screen but I couldn't call it huge advantage over the 2G. In iBooks, at the smallest font on the 2G paring with the 4G (which has 2 smaller fonts one is really, really small) I really couldn't see that much difference both are readable. The newer model has a better white background which helps.
The viewing angle on the 4G is actually worse than the 2G. You really need to be looking at it front on but then it really shines. You could probably get an older Touch for 1/3 the price of a new one which would make it very attractive. The advantage on the 4G is its noticeably faster, and the new features added but since both can do iOS 4.1 very little if any software wouldn't be usable on the 2G/3G model. The camera isn't that great but will work for quick snaps of stuff. The video recording though is very nice. |

I have to say my 2G doesn't look anywhere near that bad. I know I don't have perfect vision but I don't see that amount of background pixelation and looking at both screens at the same time, it's not that big difference to me.
Yes, the 4G has twice the res and you can take a picture and blow it up to see the aliasing on the 2G but on the tiny screen I disagree I am getting eye strain reading on the 2G. |

BTW, Those are screen image captures, not photos that you show. There is a big difference between screen captures and the actual screen. ... Last edited by jswinden; 09-10-2010 at 06:02 PM. |

Thanks for posting those pix Jack. Both displays look great to me, but the 4 is definitely sharper.
