I'm an avid reader with about 200 paper books in my TBR. I resisted reading ebooks even though I had a book come out electronically a few years ago with an epub. Then I started downloading ebooks on a flash drive and reading them on my netbook. I liked reading that way. So when the Kindle went down in price, I ordered one. I should have it Sept. 20.

For me it was simply that I read a lot and travel a lot (for work). The ability to take 100's of books with me when travelling was an overpowering incentive.

I quite like 'gadgets' as well

Like this! Before I got my Nook I never thought about the advantage of reading hands free. It's nice!

Totally agree. I really like being able to eat and read at the same time. I tried it before with pbooks, but it just wasn't worth the hassle.

Yes, that is huge! I've always done it with p-books but the hassle was huge.

I'm with y'all. In downtown Myrtle Beach is an Ethiopian restaurant across the street from a comic shop. On new comics day I always lunch there with my Kindle. There is not a more hands on cuisine than Ethiopian yet it's never a problem. I tap next page with my knuckle or little finger and keep reading. It would be ridiculous with a paper book.

Not only is it "hands on," it's considered bad manners to lick your fingers. But the food sure is good!

Basically, one thing : cheaper books.

I rarely read anything else than hardcover, due to font size, and they're expensive. I love gadgets and I thought, why not... Of course I never ended up doing any savings per se, as I buy MORE literature now than I ever bought before...!

My main reason:
A little over a year-and-a-half ago something went awry with my equilibrium. Along my world becoming like "Space Mountain Gone to Hell" on a 24-7 basis, I was unable to read for more than a few seconds. (BTW, a major drawback I found with audio-books is that, having fallen asleep, I had difficulty finding my place.
I am much better now, — still not 100%, but I really love what I cando — but my eyes fatigue much more easily than they did a couple of years ago. Enter my eReader. When need be, I can enlarge the type greatly.

Secondary reason: I thought it would be a really cool toy.

I got an ereader because books were taking control of me.
I went on trip to Syria with 12 books in my suitcase, and even than I had to borrow my co-travellers books.
Also my books are three layers deep in my bookcases and that makes looking for the right one a lengthy affaire.
As I'm pathetically careful with my books and I always had one with me; I put it in a plastic sandwichbag for fear it would get wrinkles................not cool at all.
So now I've all my books on my ereader with me all the time, and people ask me all the time: what's that you're carrying....a computer/telephone/laptop/typewriter? So it does much for my social life as well.

1. Presbyopia, larger fonts mean I can put off buying a change of spectacles for longer
2. To avoid carrying a dozen books when travelling on business
3. To avoid carrying two dozen books when on holiday
4. To avoid mind rot when I have another unplanned stay in hospital

Yes Icas; that also is one of my reasons. When I think of some of the books I've ' lost' that way, I become downright sentimental or mad, depending on my day.

The fact I was going to Australia for some time and buying and bringing paper books would be troublesome with the amount I read. I still read both paper and ebooks though.
