I've been told the software still is in beta and should be ready when the new devices are officially presented at the German book fair in Frankfurt in October.
I had the chance to give the 903 a try at an (unofficial) MR meeting the day before, and I was impressed by both software and handling. But, yup, no pearl display. The market's been looted by Amazon and Sony for the time to come. But, nope, no glare. That's those bright spotlights on the fair. Also had a chance to try the eDGE at the meeting. Nice device, but IMHO much to big and heavy, and all in all two different approaches and customers for the eDGe and the 903. And a battery life of about 12 hours for an eInk display is THE argument for me NOT to buy an eDGe ... Last edited by K-Thom; 09-04-2010 at 07:35 PM. |

I don't think eInk display technologies are ready for such high update applications as drawing etc. It strikes me that many of these vendors are trying to "run before they can walk". How about getting good display of technical books and magazines sorted out before trying to tackle notetaking which is the province of tablets at the moment.
A good display for reading is not yet suitable for highly dynamic material - why have a clock for instance when it simply reduces your battery life? What's wrong with the time on your phone, or even your watch. Get the basics right before adding bells and whistles. I admit this is a personal concern, but do the majority of eReader buyers really want to annotate material and look up items in a dictionary? What happened to just reading? |

Just reading is what Pocketbook 360 allows you to do. Pocketbook will still be producing that device, and eventually they should refresh it later on.
However, big screen devices should not be "just for reading", in the sense that they're quite costly of themselves and they're the only devices in which you have a chance to see PDF's properly. If you've seen the "Which device should I buy" subforum, it's choking full with people who ask about big readers for academic purposes. So far their only real eInk option has been Kindle DX (Sony's Daily Edition is a missed shot with its wacky screen size), a device with no touch screen and with a reportedly mediocre PDF support (though it's been improved recently if I remember properly). It was about time that someone faced Amazon. |

Yes, with the "Dingo" firmware update the battery life seems to have improved indeed. But, as you both say, it's a heavy device for deskreading in eInk and working with the lcd-side simultaneously and a class of it's own. Pricewise it'll never be attractive to the broad market in the EU anyway. And it really does depend on your special needs which device you should choose ... |

![]() Honestly, I don't think pearl is that much of a deal. Vizplex looks great provided that no touch layer affects contrast (I had the possibility to compare PRS-700 with my MM and it really made a difference). |

In videos and pictures. Not in reality. Then again, I don't mind reading old books, stinking of moistness, their pages drenched, yellowed and darkened. I guess Pearl is much superior to Vizplex, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. Not that I would mind getting a Pearl screen reader as a gift, you know (preferably a PRS-350

Let's face it: for now (and who knows how long) the only Large format Pearl eink reader will be Kindle DX. Amazon haters will either have to wait indefinitely or go with the PB902/903.
![]() There's money to be made even without Pearl. ![]() More seriously: holding back new designs for lack of Pearl is conceding the market to Amazon without firing a shot. Might as well pack up the bags and go home if you're going to do that. Competitors compete. Losers whine. Pocketbook is competing and not whining. Let's wait until the readers ship to see how they stack up in real world use. Last edited by fjtorres; 09-08-2010 at 08:28 AM. |
