Using Windows 7 on a slate is an absolute MUST for it to be usable. No phone OS is even close to cutting the mustard. There seems to be many who miss this fact. Many consider this subjective, it is not.
I am also going to order the ExoPC very soon, I am on the pre-order list. I can't wait to have this device in my hands!!! |

I too would like microsoft to step it up, there are a lot of intelligent people there that have managed to make a mess out of mostly everything in the past ten year under the management of an arch moron such as balmer. They desperately need restructuring, vision, and honesty. To release a kids phone, the kin, tout it as a revolutionary product and cancel it after 40 days and 500 units sold is on of the multitude of embarrassing examples of ineptness by microsoft.

As for google, being open couldn't be the farthest from the truth. Let me ask you something if google is open why is skype only allowed to be run as an app in verizon phones? The only open thing about android is the core kernel, on top of that it's laden with restrictions, interfaces which the various mobile companies (such as say the motoblur) put upon it, etc. etc. It couldn't be further than the truth that android is open. On top of all that when an os serves as a cash cow for advertising dollars for google restricting your search options and your privacy to almost zero, that's hardly open. You should also ask sun about how "open" android has stolen so many of their java patents. But apple's darwin (the unix basis of os x) is also open source unlike windows, as various other technologies associated with it such as open cl, grand central dispatch, facetime, cups printing, the great webkit that almost all mobile browsers use. Apple is indeed very open, the fact that they combine proprietary layers within an open structure so they can survive and thrive, doesn't mean they are "closed", they are as open as any for profit company can be. |

You can also choose the "open" route of microsoft and make close to nothing from your software from people stealing, torrenting, cracking it, or you can go to apples "closed" route where hundreds of thousands of developers are making money with a willing and able public paying them. But it seems if you are developer you've already made a bad choice of not developing for apple and hence the bitterness and all that pointless talk about open or closed. |

HP made a mistake by dropping Win 7 and selecting WebOS, this will not make a better product. The Archos had hardware issues that made the device a failure. Only now is the hardware catching up to the OS, it is not really fair to call past attempts failures. Why is there no anti-karma button? |

Archos's mistake was using win7 on a tablet not powerfull enough. But the exoslate have more power
![]() Win 7 can run on a tablet, if said tablet is not underpowered. |

So you are the judge of HP making a mistake when a whole consortium of internal experts considered paying millions for a true mobile os? I wouldn't think so. And where is the mistake? This is just empty talk. Oh it was to do with hardware sure...that's what happens when you put a desktop os on slate and expect it to function. It's not a problem with hardware but he os this hardware is supposed to run on. Put some light linux distro on it and the archos will fly. But you conveniently forgot both of these too cases... until I brought them up. So, so far ms windows 7 have produced two tablets one a cancelled vapourware and the other an non functional device. There are some more to come, let's see if the windows 7 desktop beast is good for tablets... |

Actually a win 7 can run on super overpowered tablet only, and by overpowered we really mean inefficiently so. |

I would need to run some lego app, or sigil. Too bad, neither of them exists for android. And the lego apps are windows only. I want something that can be used as a tablet, but i also want to be able to plug a keyboard, and use it as a fully functional laptop. Last edited by EowynCarter; 09-07-2010 at 11:23 AM. |

I am no MS fan boy, but Windows 7 is the best OS to date. If something better comes along, I will test for sure. Having a built-in SDHC (or SDXC) card reader is a must, not just for additional storage, but so that content can be swapped around as needed. I keep several 32GB SDHC cards with me at all times. They contain movies, eBooks, music, portable apps, pictures, etc. I just insert whichever one I want depending on what media I want to consume at the time. I will never rely on “the cloud” to access content that should be kept locally. That would truly be a huge step backwards. Having USB port(s) is a must as well. I have an external DVD reader/burner that I connect as needed. I plug in USB thumb drives as needed. I can connect many other peripherals as needed. Any device missing USB port(s) is a no-sale, period. It is a must that I am able to install any software I want, from the place of my choosing. It is an absolute must that I am able to copy/paste content to/from the device at my discretion. I will never rely on any “sync” program just to get content on a device, that is a huge step backwards. Any device like this must have a file browser, period. These points are just so self evident that I cannot understand why it has to be repeated over and over again. Last edited by CyGuy; 09-08-2010 at 08:40 AM. |

i preordered a Exopc also...been looking for a color comic reading tablet that i can read full size without scrolling up down or right left, and the exopc fits the bill. The Ipad needs about another inch to have that capability (for my eyes) and the exopc has that extra inch, or more. Plus, i can cram a SD 32gb card full of comics and go to town. To each his own of course, but this exopc fits the bill (former follower of HP slate, Notion Ink, MS Courier, etc.). Oh and the UI overtop windows 7 is what makes it rather unique, though that can be disabled if you want.

Windows 7 was built for multi-Touch. You equate open to mean non-proprietary. That is a real definition and separates the Mac and Window OS from Linux. Most of the open source licenses are structured around the GNU General Public license. We were not talking about that type of open source. We were talking about an open application environment where you can install whatever program you want to install. Now you can equate that to viruses and instability but so can an open society be equated with violence and crime. There are trade offs and I accept responsibility for the programs I install. Apple makes those points just as the Dear Leader might to offer a better society. I don't want Apple to tell me what is ok to install. They don't do it with the Mac and should not with the phone. The EXOPC will run windows 7 without any resource issues and will do a great job with performance. The dead Slates of the past happened when we didn't have the processing power to handle the task. It would have been the same for Apple. Why do you think they joined the game this late with a Slate and even the phone. They let others do the heavy lifting. Once the issues were mainly resolved they moved in and said, hey we can do it better. They just took advantage of the hard work of others. Here again, I really have a lot of respect for Apple and the others. We may disagree vehemently but I don't call you an idiot and stupid for your choices. While you may not have used those exact words that is how you have talked to me and the others. Why can't you have an engaging and lively debate without putting everyone down? |
